Summary
To find a murderer, you need a motive . . .
THE DETECTIVE
DS George Cross has always wondered why his mother left him when he was a child. Now she is back in his life, he suddenly has answers. But this unexpected reunion is not anything he's used to dealing with. When a disturbing case lands on his desk, he is almost thankful for the return to normality.
THE QUESTION
The body of a monk is found savagely beaten to death in a woodland near Bristol. Nothing is known about Brother Dominic's past, which makes investigating difficult. How can Cross unpick a crime when they don't know anything about the victim? And why would someone want to harm a monk?
THE PAST
Discovering who Brother Dominic once was only makes the picture more puzzling. He was a much-loved and respected friend, brother, son—he had no enemies. Or, at least, none that are obvious. But looking into his past reveals that he was a very wealthy man, that he sacrificed it all for his faith. For a man who has nothing, it seems strange that greed could be the motive for his murder. But greed is a sin after all . . .

Another exceptional case.
Yet another convoluted case, solved in no small part, by DS Cross’ tenacious, insightful and unique abilities.
He has become one of my favourite detectives, along with a supporting cast of characters, all bringing their talents to the cause.
Special mention for the narrator, who yet again adds a wonderful tone and pace to the tale.

Get a better narrator
I’ve listened to all the stories in this series and they’re extremely good; well written and entertaining. Surely they deserve a better narrator? The first two books had a fairly dull reader but the rest have been read by someone who doesn’t seem to have a grasp of basic English pronunciation. Isn’t there an editor on hand while they’re being recorded? I speeded up his delivery to avoid falling asleep but found myself grinding my teeth at the mispronunciations in exasperation instead.
Give the respect due to this talented author by commissioning a worthy narrator for the rest of the series.

The best yet
Tim Sullivan gets better and better with each novel . His insight into human psychology and interaction of personalities is fabulous . I adore each character for for their own merit . Cross of course, Ottey for her patience . Mackenzie for her enthusiasm and Swift for his fan boy zeal . The monk was a story of greed and how indulgence leads to entitlement and how the honesty of one man led to his death , even though he had given himself to Christ . Each novel is uniquely different and I can’t wait for the next in the series.

Intriguing
First book in this series that I’ve tried . Will definitely be reading the rest and hope they are as good !
DC Cross is definitely’ one of a kind ‘ …..and all the more enjoyable for that . The story line was quite
complex but never overwhelming and it kept me engaged and guessing .
Enjoyed the interactions and back story too .
All in all , a winning combination for me .

Great story
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story and can’t wait to listen to another by the author.
DS Cross is an endearing autistic character who did make me chuckle a few times to myself.

Enjoyable instalment in the series but …
I thoroughly enjoyed the story but the mispronunciations by the narrator grated and truly spoiled the novel. Whilst I look forward to the next instalment I do wish they would change the narrator.

Superb
What a fantastic character George Cross is! In this book George is struggling with the fact that his mother is back in his life and he just doesn't know how to deal with it, especially since his father is growing closer to her. I loved the monastic setting of this book which captivated me as much as it did George. The character development in this series is wonderful, and though this could be read as a standalone the series is much better read in order. I never manage to solve the mysteries in these novels but love getting an insight into George's thought processes. Just superb!
