Story
The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn, including Miss Marple, are agog with curiosity over an advertisement in the local gazette which reads: ‘A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6.30 p.m.' A childish practical joke? Or a hoax intended to scare poor Letitia Blacklock? Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks at the appointed time when, without warning, the lights go out.

Story
What is the connection between a failed suicide attempt, a wrongful accusation of theft against a schoolgirl, and the romantic life of a famous tennis player? To the casual observer, apparently nothing. But when a houseparty gathers at Gull's Point, the seaside home of an elderly widow, earlier events come to a dramatic head. It's all part of a carefully paid plan for murder.

To understand the strange goings on at The Pale Horse Inn, Mark Easterbrook knew he had to begin at the beginning. But where exactly was the beginning? Was it the savage blow to the back of Father Gorman's head? Or was it when the priest's assailant searched him so roughly, he tore the clergyman's cassock? Or could it have been the priest's visit, just minutes before, to a woman on her deathbed? Or was there a deeper significance to the violent squabble that Mark Easterbrook had himself witnessed earlier?

All great crime writers have their favourite creations. Similarly, every great sleuth has his, or her, own preferred method of deduction. Take the charming Parker Pyne, who relies upon an intuitive knowledge of human nature to solve the 'Problem at Pollensa Bay'. Or Mr Satterthwaite, who seeks inspiration through his collaboration with the enigmatic Mr Quin in 'The Harlequin Tea Set' mystery. Then, of course, there's Poirot, whose measured analysis of motive and opportunity is tested to the full in 'Yellow Iris', when he receives an anonymous call about a matter of life and death.

Gipsy's Acre was a truly beautiful upland site with views out to sea, and in Michael Rogers it stirred a child-like fantasy. There, amongst the dark fir trees, he planned to build a house, find a girl, and live happily ever after. But as he left the village, a shadow of menace hung over the land, for this was the place where accidents happened. Perhaps Michael should have heeded the locals' warnings: "There's no luck for them as meddles with Gipsy's Acre."

A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation starring June Whitfield as Miss Marple, the sharp-witted spinster sleuth. In the sleepy little English country village of St Mary Mead, all is not as it seems. Under a seemingly peaceful exterior lurks intrigue, guilt, deception - and murder. Colonel Protheroe, local magistrate and overbearing landowner, is the most detested man in the village. Everyone, even the vicar, wishes he were dead. And very soon he is - shot in the head in the vicar's own study.

Summary
Of poison pens and poisoning: a gripping Miss Marple mystery.
Lymstock is a town with more than its share of shameful secrets—a town where even a sudden outbreak of anonymous hate-mail causes only a minor stir. But all that changes when one of the recipients, Mrs Symmington, commits suicide. Her final note said ‘I can't go on'.
Only Miss Marple questions the coroner's verdict of suicide. Was this the work of a poison-pen? Or of a poisoner?

Excellent story and the best Miss Marple performer
Not only is this one of the great Miss Marple stories, but Richard E. Grant is clearly the best of all the Miss Marple performers, a joy to listen to. It is such a shame he hasn't done more of them, preferably all. An excellent listen and highly recommended.

Armchair detectiving at it's best
Excellent plot, excellently read.
Agatha Christie brilliantly creates the atmosphere of an exaggerated English village of the 40's filled with caricatures who are not too outlandish to be believable. From poison pen letters to budding romance to murder Christie created a plot that is neither too strenuous to listen to nor dull.
Richard E Grant makes for a very pleasant listen. He is one of the UK's forgotten treasures. Grant brings each character to life with well chosen inflections and accents.
Overall, a highly recommended listen.

Best performance since Joan Hickson
An utterly delightful delivery by Richard E Grant of what must be the most satisfying Marple story - 3 love affairs, Miss Marple at her fluffiest and most disarming, all in a smothering village atmosphere.
I’ve listened to the Joan Hickson stories time and again and was so pleased to find that Richard E Grant’s readings equally capture the Marple magic

Very Disappointing
I got this audiobook as, even for it's faults, this is probably my favourite Marple story (Even though she's not in it much). I preferred to get this version as whilst Joan hickson was great in the tv role, her narration isn't. Also, given the story is told from the main male character, it made sense for a man to narrate it. The fact it was Richard E Grant gave me confidence as well. How wrong I was. When her just talking as Jerry, it's ok if a little monotone, but the rest is awful.
firstly, his pronunciation of the name Aimee is just downright annoying. Then there's the supposed Yorkshire accents. They were so bad is was almost laughable. He didn't seem to have much range in other voices either. I know it's a fine line for narrators to get a good balance between interesting or accurate to almost becoming caricatures but there didn't even sam to be an attempt here.
I managed to slog on until the end, mainly because I knew the bits I really disliked weren't in the story as much after about halfway. I'll be returning it as I know I'll never listen to it again. If you like Marple, especially this story, get the BBC radio adaptation with June Whitfield. Aside from her being in it all the through and from the beginning, it's very true to the story and the performances are excellent.

Unusual Christie
I wanted to review this one because it differs somewhat from the usual Christie formula. It's a bit darker and racier - mostly implied rather than fully shown - and in some ways more modern. The requisite murder takes a long time to appear in the story, and Miss Marple takes even longer. In fact, even calling it a Miss Marple novel is a stretch, when her role is more of a glorified cameo. Mostly I enjoyed it, though I could've done without the romance subplots.

A great Agatha Christie magnificently rendered by Richard E Grant. I almost know the book by heart, but discovered the narrator and his performance of the story with pleasure. Joan Hickson IS Miss Marple on the screen, but I don't really fancy her reading Agatha Christie's novels on Audible as they are, well, basically just read. Grant does an outstanding job with the voices & accents and I shall be looking for him performing on other books.

Brilliant version
I really enjoyed Richard E. Grant reading this as it's from the male perspective. I do like Joan Hickson reading the Miss Marple books, but she doesn't come in until the end.
I first listened to Richard E. Grant on Murder at the Vicarage which is from the Vicars perspective so I had idea of his character voices already, all them brilliantly executed.
A series of poison pen letters sent to the community, whisperings of "no smoke, without fire" where will it end?
Perfect listen, not too long and easy to follow.

Reduced the chore of painting.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Moving Finger to be better than the print version?
Can't say - haven't read the print version.
Any additional comments?
I really loved listening to this early Agatha Christie book. MIss Marple doesn't make an entry until well into the story. The identity of the killer, as always isn't easy to pick, but Miss Marple does it of course. Was a good story set in an English village (where else), very easy to listen to and perfectly narrated at a perfect pace. I hate painting skirting boards and woodwork but this took my mind off the job and before I knew it it was done!

An early Christie
And not a lot of Miss M, though she does show up with her knitting.
I did find myself wondering 'who did it?' when my main suspect was ruled out, only to be reinstated later.
Richard E Grant did read quite nicely thank you. A few fluffs at times though that really did not detract very much, More perhaps that a real live person was reading me a story and that is always a treat.
All up a lovely Christie I had never read before and enjoyed very much.
