Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

We tend to believe that normality equals health. Yet what is the norm in the Western world?

Mental illness is on an unstoppable rise. Some 45 percent of Europeans suffer high blood pressure, and nearly 70 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug. Illness and trauma are defining how we live.

In his new masterpiece, renowned physician, addiction expert and author Gabor Maté dissects the underlying causes of this malaise—physical and emotional, and connects the dots between our personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living. Over four decades of clinical experience, Dr Maté has found that the common definition of 'normal' is false: virtually all disease is actually a natural reflection of life in an abnormal culture, as we grow further and further apart from our true selves. But he also shows us the pathway to reconnection and healing.

Filled with stories of people in the grip of illness or in the triumphant wake of recovery, this life-affirming audiobook shows how true health is possible—if we are willing to embrace authenticity above social expectations. The Myth of Normal is Gabor Maté's most ambitious, compassionate and urgent book yet.

The book that humanity has been waiting for

Seems I’ve waited my whole life, so far as it is, for the validation that Gabor and Daniel bring us.
For EVERYONE, for all mankind.
Many many thanks.

Great book but with slight wokeness vibes

Fantastic observations, but Gabor swallowed the critical race theory pill and ruined a chapter or two with it. I think if one understands theories of mass consciousness they understand that the trauma of being a minority race is often based simply on conformity and not only on some kind of racism being perpetuated by mean white people living out their traumas. Just simple, ordinary conformity issues.

Cringingly embarrassing racist accents

A wonderful book but please read it to avoid the truely dreadfully bad, racist, stereotyped accents that the narrator uses. The English Scottish and French accents make Dick Van Dyke sound like a native cockney. How can this happen in tne 2020’s?
Ruined the listening experience.
Do read it though,

Incredible

An incredibly well written, well researched and original book. Beautifully blends ideas of rationality and spirituality, and conveys a very poignant concept like no other book I’ve read

10/10 - plan to read many more times

Very enjoyable and eye opening

A very impressive book, informative and well structured. Gabor and Daniel compile their own thoughts, research and life experiences along with many many life experiences and stories of others. I will be going back to make notes on the more practical chapters near the end, tools to use in everyday life. This book really made me reframe allot of what I thought I knew about trauma and mental health along with physical health and how they are all linked.

The narration was clear, well spoken and pleasant to listen to.

I will be reading/listening to this again!

Very well researched and explained material. Absolutely fascinating exploration of the body-mind link, our responses to trauma and the potential resulting impacts of unexplored long-term patterns of thought and behaviour that can arise from past experiences.

Enjoyed this book very much, and have discussed some aspects of the research with my patients. Have bought the book as well and made a mental note to revisit many of the chapters.

Before I invested in this audiobook, I read the reviews and saw mention of issues with the performance. I have had no such negative experience.

Daniel Mate’s voice is pleasant to listen to and I felt he was engaged with the material he was reading. This is a long book and for anyone wanting more time during the narration for contemplation, there is always the pause button.

I have recommended this book to therapists, medics, patients, family and friends and it’s not often that happens! This book may not be for everyone (which book is?) but for anyone with an open mind I recommend it heartily!

Great book, shame about the bad accents!

really enjoyed the writing and most of the delivery. found the bad English and French accents, and the weird soft voice occasionally used for women, really off putting. other than that, enjoyed it and would recommend!

This is a must-read for anyone trying to make sense of the world and the trauma it induces on its inhabitants.
