Summary
Sometimes darkness stalks the most beautiful places....
On Doogort East Bog, Achill Island, a body is found. The close community is stunned to learn that it's Lisa Moran, a popular teacher who disappeared two days earlier.
DS Lucy Golden is assigned to the case. For her, it's personal. As an Achill native, she knows that sometimes great evil can lurk in plain sight. Having moved back from Dublin, she has spent the last 10 years trying to prove herself to her colleagues after her husband was jailed for fraud. This is her chance to put the past behind her. Her teenage son Luc's behaviour, however, is increasingly troubling, and Lucy doesn't have time for distractions.
When another body is found in an abandoned property on the bog, with links to a murder 20 years ago, the stakes are raised - but a pattern is emerging. Can Lucy put the pieces together? Or will her family crisis mean the murderer claims his next victim?
Critic reviews

Really engaging story with relatable characters.
I would heartily to commend this audiobook. The story was great, with some twists and the relationship between Lucy and Dan was believable and mutually supportive. The narration was superb - I had anticipated that it would be as I had previously listened to several Jo Spain book narrated by Aoife MacMahon, who can switch regions and gender seamlessly without it ever sounding absurd which is no mean feat. There is enough warmth and feelgood in the story to balance the darkness, enough of a sense that some people will choose life and redemption as a salve to the pain they have gone through.

A brilliant listen
I must say I really enjoyed this book I liked all the characters, even the DI wasn't so overbearing like in some books. Some put this book like the Lottie Parker books but this book is far far better, it concentrates on the case and shows how they try to solve the case, yes there is a little bit of home life for Lucy but unlike the Parker books its more about the case and less about her.
Aoife McMahon is a perfect as always as narrator I don't know the different dialects in Ireland but sure Aoife does them well. I am looking forward to more books

The Perfect Combination
This audiobook is the perfect combination of excellent writing and first class narration. It is the author’s debut novel and I am so looking forward to her next (a series with this police detective would be great). The characters here are well drawn and engaging, the story moves along at a pace, without the common cliched twists. This is not to say that the story, or the ending, is predictable. That is far from the case. Aoife McMahon’s narration is rich and faultless as always. Highly recommended!
