About this listen

The latest research in neuroscience and parenting come together in this groundbreaking book, which brings to light new realizations about the power of nurture for our children's mental and physical health outcomes.

Greer Kirshenbaum, PhD. is a neuroscientist, doula, and parent. Her work began with the goal of developing new treatments for poor mental health; she dreamed of creating a new medication to address conditions like anxiety, depression, addiction, and chronic stress. Over time, she realized that science had already uncovered a powerful medicine for alleviating mental health struggles, but the answer wasn’t a pill. It was a preventative approach: when babies' receive nurturing care in the first three years of life, it builds strong, resilient brains—brains that are less susceptible to poor mental health.

How can parents best set their children up for success? In this revelatory book, Dr. Kirshenbaum makes plain that nurture is a preventative medicine against mental health issues. She challenges the idea that the way to cultivate independence is through letting babies cry it out or sleep alone; instead, the way to raise a confident, securely attached child is to lean in to nurture, to hold your infant as much as you want, support their emotions, engage in back-and-forth conversations, be present and compassionate when your baby is stressed, and share sleep. Research has proven that nurturing experiences transform lives. Nurturing is a gift of resilience and health parents can give the next generation simply by following their instincts to care for their young.

Informative, validating, research and science backed

I love how informative, research and science based this book is. I wish it existed when I was pregnant last year. Reading (listening to) this book has been so validating to my instincts as a first time mum. I’ve already gifted it to a pregnant friend.

I am recommending this book to anyone I meet for the rest of my life.

Excellent book such useful information in a very accessible format. I learn something from every chapter and am so glad I found it this early in my parenting journey. I have already used some of the suggestions and am really leaning into my connection with my 7 month old baby, and so affirming for the effort I am already putting in to building our relationship. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this piece of art. Possibly the best book I have ever read.

outstanding , allowed me to trust my instincts!

I want to thank the author for this phenomenal book. we cosleep, contact nap , I respond to her every cry, I hold her as much as she wants and yet I'm constantly asked when she will be out my bed and that I'm spoiling her. she needs to sleep independently etc etc and I have fought it and done what feels instinctively right and nurturing. and this book has confirmed what I am doing is loving and Nurturing and not harmful, quite the opposite! my baby is 9 months and I wish I could have had this book from day 1! I'm so proud of myself and the parts about healing my inner child brought me to tears. Happy tears. thank you!

A must read for all parents and parents to be

Fascinating book and a must read for all parents and parents to be. Even grandparents or anyone who will be caring for your baby! This book explains why our babies NEED us and to trust our parent instincts rather than get sucked in by the external world (sleep training etc). Since reading her book I feel like I know my baby more now than ever and can meet all of her needs.
