Tale of the Unexpected

I received a free copy from the author and wasn’t sure what to expect.
It’s a story that engaged me from the start and held my attention throughout. Quite suspenseful and a good pace, no problems with the narrator and overall a very enjoyable listen.
I very rarely buy books of this length but would be interested in a book of this type of short stories.

Spooky Short Story

The People makes for an intriguing listen as Kendall Harrison sees a number of ghostly apparitions in quick succession. To say much more would be to ruin this spooky short story, which utilises a number of interesting ideas to keep you listening! I have to admit that I had a number of questions after the first few minutes and by creating these queries early on, you’ll definitely be hooked by the end. Unlike many shorts, this one does give you all the answers at the story's conclusion and I’d certainly be up for listening to the next tales in the series. It’s written well and certainly doesn’t outstay it’s welcome! If anything, I would have preferred the story to go on a little bit longer to eke out the mystery; perhaps that is something the author will explore in future.

The narration is perfect for the story type and although there’s a slight hissing sound to the audio, it actually enhances this particular tale, adding to the atmosphere. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something to enjoy over a lazy hour.

Full disclosure: I received a copy of this tale at no cost in exchange for a fair and honest review.

An eerie and memorable tale.

Spooky tale of karma unexpectedly catching up to you. Nicely written, but the narrator is a little monotonous. It is otherwise well read.

I enjoyed the absence of violence and gore, which is prevalent in this genre.

I would recommend this story to fans of Stephen King.

Great short story

Grabbed me straight away and read in one sitting as it's only 50 mins and had a style of writing that easily draws you in. I quickly felt the atmosphere being created, felt the tension - the hairs on your arms, cold on the back of your neck and shiver for no apparent reason feeling!
It's a supernatural tale, with a lesson to the human race sitting behind it. I won't say any more about the content as it will spoil the story but it's certainly worth getting for a short and easy listen, if you like creepy tales.
I enjoyed the writing style and will certainly look out for more by this author.

A story with great potential that will stay with you

Short stories are very hard to write well, with limited room for character development and a need to finely balance the amount of descriptive content with the action. They require a great idea, and perfect execution.
The People is based on a brilliant idea for a thrilling tale, so definitely meets the first requirement. As for execution, while it’s written well, I felt the story’s rhythm could have been done differently to make the most of this great idea and bring it up to its full potential: less description of surroundings and more of the leading character at the beginning, or better still: turning the entire story around and starting with its end.
Setting out by describing the details of this puzzling investigation (including all supernatural aspects) and later gradually exploring the story of the victim’s last day would have turned the suspense and thrill up a notch and given room for all the descriptive detail, which, put into the beginning of the story felt a bit pointless and overdone, I think it would have made much more sense the other way around.
The rather brief description of the investigation following the revelation of the mystery was a bit of wasted potential.
I’ve noticed some interesting word choices throughout the story; the style of writing was a bit like an essay or school paper, which is not necessarily a bad thing, maybe a bit sterile for a thriller for my taste.
The narrator has great potential, even though he had a few mispronunciations and his punctuation was quite monotone. Thrillers certainly benefit from stronger voice acting, although the lack of dialogue makes this difficult.
Overall a good short story that will stay with the reader, worth spending an hour on it.
