About this listen

In Hollywood, no one is innocent....

Hollywood 1939. The year that The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind were made. Detective Craine has spent his life working as a studio fixer, whitewashing the misdemeanours and crimes committed by the studio players and stars. But now he's trying to turn his back on that life following the recent death of his wife, as he's determined to be a better parent to his young son.

But then Craine's services are called upon one last time. MGM need him to smooth over the press coverage of the suicide of one of their producers. And soon, what should be a straightforward case proves anything but when connections are made between it and a brutal murder across town. And that's just the start of the story.

It's only a matter of time before Craine must decide whether to follow orders or to attempt to redeem a career of concealment by going in search of the ugly truth. It's a choice he knows cannot end well.

Critic reviews

"Definitely recommended.... There's a real pace to the story and an effortless evocation of the Hollywood of the nineteen thirties.... It's his first novel and is particularly assured for a debut." ( The Bookbag)

Started off well, poor middle, amazing ending!

The beginning of The Pictures heralded promise, but ultimately the middle section of the book affected my overall enjoyment. I felt it dragged due to a narrative polluted with elements that really brought nothing to the main plot. That being said, the last third of the book was incredible. I could not stop listening. Had the entire book been like that it would have been an easy 5 stars. I will consider reading more from the author in the future.

Formulaic mediocrity

How many times during the course of this book did I come close to hitting the delete button!? The main characters all ciphers for whom not a shred of compassion could be elicited. Written with a seemingly hoped for movie script pick-up. Let's hope it's a forlorn hope!!
