Really very good 👍🏽

I liked this book. It was different from the other thrillers I've enjoyed.
The narration flowed, the storyline strong ... The characters are realistic. Not my usual author, but I'll certainly be happy to read/listen to further books by them. Easy listening and straightforward. Definitely a 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really enjoyable thriller

I really enjoyed this book, it was one of those that I was listening to at every and any opportunity! I figured out the main aspects of the plot early on, but that made it thrilling in the way it does when you're watching, say, a murder programme, and the viewer knows who the murderer is, but the people in the drama don't, and you just want them to figure it out! I definitely recommend this book and will be reading more from this author. Good narration too, really got the dead-pan feel of the main character across.

Solid plot

Good writing but of all the murderous plot twist’ stories on audible, the plot twist concept wasn’t strong enough. Worth a listen still

McDine honours her promises as usual ...

... and brings us another great thriller!

I’ve read all of AJ’s thrillers, they’re all wonderful but this is my favourite. She just gets better and better.

McDine has an amazing talent for creating characters whose lives you get sucked into from the first turn of the page. But what makes this story so compelling is the protagonist who’s like an old cat lady you dislike, feel sorry for, then fall in love with as her story unfolds.

The book opens with a bang when Rose’s best friend’s daughter - who she hasn’t seen since she was a young girl - shows up on the doorstep asking Rose to honour the promise she made to her years ago: to come whenever she needs help. Only the help the girl needs isn’t quite what Rose is expecting!

McDine’s writing is so tight and realistic - her dialogue particularly - that you forget you’re reading fiction as you spend time with her three-dimensional characters. It’s a real talent to be able to do that, especially to create wonderful character arcs that make you change your mind as they develop slowly and believably. So many thrillers blur into each other but I never forget AJ’s because I feel like I’ve lived every moment.

Great story and I love the narrator; her performance is natural and engaging. What more can you ask for?

Can’t WAIT for the next one!

Brilliant!

Glad I stuck with the initial 2 chapters because this quickly turned into such a brilliant book. I love a flawed main character. Wish it was longer!

it was okay

The plot was thought out and rolled out slowly, but it was kind of obvious from early on.
I'm not sure how I felt about Rose...was she a good or bad person?

As a proofreader myself, what grated most was that the narrator clearly didn't fact-check place names. I live in Teynham and it was pronounced incorrectly. Secondly, not sure if the narrator or author was to blame, but it is 'The Archbishop's Palace', in Maidstone. not 'Place'. Just small things, but if you choose to use real places, at least fact-check!!!
I found the narrator rushed a lot so rambled over words frequently, and while her regional accents were good, was it just by chance that the Matthews family were from Liverpool and the Kent Police detective was from Birmingham? All of whom lived in Kent?

I loved this!

This is one of the best written and narrated books I’ve listened to this year. The narrator is probably one of my favourites.

Really good plot and well written. A little predictable towards the end but still very enjoyable. I can’t wait to download more from this author!
