A gripping new recording of Philip Pullman's nerve-shattering thriller, set in the murky streets and opium dens of Old London.

Fantastic story and performance

A brilliant mystery tale with twists and turns that keep you on your toes and desperate to listen!

Couldn’t disagree more with the previous reviewer when it comes to the reading itself. I found the character voices fantastic, varied and the general performance was so compelling and engaging. Such an impressive range of accents too. Bravo! Can’t wait to listen to the next two in the series.

Fantastic

Having read this & all the other Sally Lockhart series a few years ago getting this was a joy for me the narration & all the character voices brought this book even more to life.
I’m a massive fan of Phillip Pullman having read all the HDM series of books I would highly recommend this & cannot wait to get the next book on the series.

A rip roaring adventure of intreague, deception & familial love

A cracking yarn of a wonderful ruby, heroin & our heroine Sally. Difficult to put down as you follow this adventure through the seedy streets of 1870s London.

Awful narration

Although this is an absolutely captivating an amazing story and it has absolutely everything a book needs in it and it’s my all-time favorite the narration is absolutely rubbish and I hope that book 2 is not narrated by the same person

Enjoyable

But the voices were a little too much at times and it became very “squawky” and annoying

Absolutely Splendid

An excellent tale, superbly read by Adjoa Andoh, who convincingly brings every character to life. Thoroughly captivating.

Rip roaring yarn told with gusto

Philip Pullman’s characters are vibrant and interesting in this tale of intrigue and friendship. The baddies are wonderfully bad.

Great story, terrible character voices

I love the Philip Pullman stories and Ruby In The Smoke is one of my all time favourites. However, this audio version is really let down by the odd, and at times unimaginative (quite a few characters sound the same), character voices of the narrator. Such a shame as I was counting down the days in anticipation of the release for this audio version.
