Erskine is compelling as always
I have read or listened to nearly all of Barbara Erskine's books and never have I disliked a main character as much as I do Ruth. She is ridiculously annoying and I felt myself hoping she would come to a sticky end all the through the story.
That aside I love how Erskine can transport you into another world and time. Her books are extremely difficult to put down.
This is also one of the better narrators, I have had to stop a few of her other audio narrations and buy the book instead.

Well written but a bit lengthy towards the end
I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book as it is well written and well performed. I found after that that themes became a bit repetitive. Also, the ending of the book gives a partial resolution. I do not want to give too much away, just to say one of the two problems the main character has throughout the book suddenly goes away without any satisfactory explanation as to why that is - unless I missed the crucial bit of text (doing stuff while listening).

On the whole an intriguing tale but
as usual from this author a great story woven with interesting and sympathetic characters but the ending just seemed to fizzle out leaving me irritated and unsatisfied.

Thoroughly enjoyable
The combination of History and fiction is a winner for me. True, it was perhaps a bit long for some but I enjoyed every minute.

lots of oohs ahhs and gasps. Great stuff ending was abrupt but I didn't want it to end.

a little disappointed...
Having read and enjoyed all the other Barbara Erskine novels, I was looking forward to The Ghost Tree. I was a little disappointed though. The historical part of the book was a really compelling tale woven around Thomas Erskine, however I didn't really feel absorbed by the rest of the story as I had done with previous books. I felt the modern day element of it was a bit of an afterthought and didn't really develop at all. The characters in this part of the story were a bit one-dimensional, I had no real picture in my mind about what any of them looked like. I was also left feeling a bit dissatisfied by the ending which I won't spoil. Having said that though, this was just my opinion and I would still recommend it. The narrator was excellent and made listening an absolute pleasure.
