Summary

On Sunday, February 3rd 1990, seven-year-old Danny Redpath disappeared from his home. Four months later, his body was found in the nearby forest, washed clean of all evidence. Over time, more bodies were discovered; more families devastated forever.

Apprehended while attempting to abduct another child, Jonathan Egan-Walsh was charged with the murders of thirteen boys. Convicted on all counts, he received life in prison and went unrepentant, still refusing to reveal the whereabouts of one of his victims, Zachery Marshall.

Twenty-five years later, Zachery’s mother Diane is still searching for his body. When Jonathan dies in custody, she realises she will never know its location – until she receives a letter he left in his cell, in which he admits he was guilty of all the crimes of which he was accused, except the murder of her son.

Diane tracks down the woman in charge of the case at the time, former DI Caroline Turner, and together with Jonathan’s biographer Alex Frost they start to investigate. Could this be the killer’s final twist of the knife – or is he telling the truth at long last? Sooner or later, this secret buried and undisturbed for a quarter of a century will come to light.

Guessed the killer from the beginning

Good book but I predicted the ending very early on. Joanne is a great narrator

this book had me gripped from the beginning.

this book had me gripped from the start, even though it was about a child that was missing and others that had been killed which is not my go to fir a book to read. there was something about this book that made me want to get to the end. and the interview at the end with Michael Wood was an added bonus

More than worth a listen

Author has taken a real life scenario and made it into a great book....a little predictable and Joanne Froggat isn't great at male voices but I enjoyed it and thoroughly recommemd

Superb plot and storyline

Michael Wood has your full attention from the first sentence and that doesn’t stop all the way through the narrative. He, cleverly has factual information sewn in and wonderfully intertwines 4 family situations together as the mystery unfolds into a tremendous climax and conclusion. Joanne Froggatt and Matthew Horne read and perform the story so well. They lead you into the lives and thoughts of each character, so much so that you’re living the drama in and through them! Excellent! Highly recommended.

Well written novel

This book had a very difficult subject as it’s main story. To say I liked it would be the wrong choice of words given the storyline but it was excellently told. I found I was immersed in the characters and emotionally involved in the story. The narration was excellent, that word again, and the use of Joanne Froggatt was a great choice given her regional accent. The final reveal at the end left me gin smacked! Was not expecting that. Will look out for other novels by this author to listen to.

Great listen

I haven't heard the series by this author so came to it fresh.

The narration didn't grip me at first but but is actually excellent once you get into it, with very clear accents/voices for different characters.

The plot is intriguing, based at least partly on Ian Brady's case, and had enough depth to leave some doubt as to the suspect until the very end, even though I think most people will guess - but that doesn't make the book any less enjoyable to listen to.

There were just a few moments where the characters did or said something that didn't feel quite right and seemed to be more to move the plot along, which is why I've not given the book 5 stars.

It's still a very good listen and one that I'm happy to recommend to people into crime thrillers.

The content (Child murder and assault) is handled sensitively, but it may still not be for the squeamish.

Gripping!

One of the most gripping, thrilling books I’ve ever listened to. I was hooked.

Joanne Frogatt reads flawlessly and really makes each character their own with her different accents and voices. What amazing characters Wood has created. The fabulous trio of Diane, Alex & Caroline and the evil Egan Walsh.

I had no clue until the very end and it kept me guessing! However not one to read if you want a peaceful night sleep lol.
