Summary

DCI Hanlon faces the toughest decision of her career as a string of political murders lead to a deadly confrontation.

A controversial, right-wing German politician is due to speak at the Oxford Union. Following a series of murders linked to a violent anarchist group, the city is on high alert. DCI Hanlon has been partnered with DI Huss to ensure the speech goes smoothly and that there will be no more killing.

Meanwhile, as Hanlon traces the person behind the murders, she soon realises that the chilling truth has a terrible price. Is Hanlon willing to meet the cost?

The final gripping case for DCI Hanlon. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Lisa Regan and Mark Dawson.

Terrible ending - needs a follow-up!

Liked the story but, as this seems to be the last DCI Hamlin book before she becomes PIHanlon, this is a very poor ending!!!

Hm.

Great prequel but... Sorry, but the narration was over the top. It was acted out rather than read. Couldn't wait for the book to finish.

Great read

Really enjoyed this book. The narration was fine for me although not as good as other books in the PI series. I did have to keep going back over the previous few pages to hear some of the text again but this is more down to me wanting to ensure I heard exactly what I thought I had. I do hope the author continues with this character either in further prequels or in a continuation from book three as PI. Whilst I can understand some of the negative comments from other readers, I would not let this put any followers of this character and for me, it was exciting and action packed.

Out of book order?

I found this very strange. I read book 3 recently and this is supposed to be book 4 but it seems to be set before book 3. The writing styles in Books 2 &3 was much more mature and cohesive. This reads more like a writer learning their craft. Not the best Hanlon book by a long way.

Hanson to the rescue again

Alex produces the goods again. if you like the other books you will love this one just as much. We all long for a strong female heroine (that's probably too stereotypical for you young woke people) Hanlon fits the bill. A good read well read that keeps you engaged until the somewhat bitter end. Next please

A good read

It was a while since I had read others in the series so it took me a while to reconnect with the main characters. I had to listen to the first few chapters a couple of times to memorize all the names but once I got into the book I enjoyed it.

Not as good as the other Hanlon tales

Just not plausible in parts. Disjointed and disappointing.
Not sure why certain characters were included only to be strangely absent later.

Narration

Good story as always by this author. The cockney accent of Hanlon spoiled it for me though. Her accent in the books based in Scotland was far superior and gave her character an impressive cool edge. Due to the change I didn’t feel I was listening to Hanlon I’m afraid which was disappointing.
