Summary

One fine day, A.D. 70, Sosia Camillina quite literally runs into Marcus Didius Falco on the steps of the Forum. It seems Sosia is on the run from a couple of street toughs, and after a quick and dirty rescue, P.I. Falco wants to know why.

Falco finds out that Sosia, the niece of a highly placed senator, holds the secret to a stockpile of silver pigs, ingots intended for no good use. Hoping for future favors from Sosia's powerful uncle, Falco embarks on an intricate case of smuggling, murder, and treason that reaches into the palace itself. And if he does not tread lightly, the treacherous puzzle of the silver pigs could buy him a one-way ticket to his own funeral pyre.

Mystery : Humour : Information.

Lindsey Davis has a relish for Ancient Roman history that brings the period and way of life alive to the reader. Her main characters have warmth and immediacy, with a sense of humour throughout that raises many a chuckle. I painlessly absorbed a surface knowledge of Roman law, architecture, religious ritual and deities, etc., in a totally enjoyable way.
I first read this novel many years ago and so enjoyed the Audible version I am ordering more of the series.

Detective fun in ancient Rome

What did you like most about The Silver Pigs?

I like the idea of being transported to Ancient Rome.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Silver Pigs?

Falco in love.

He's very good.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It kept me listening, it's not a comedy or a weepy.

Any additional comments?

Enjoyed the ride, it did go on a little bit longer than I was comfortable with but I'd listen to the next one.

the voice of falco (when its not Anton Lesser)

so relieved Christian Rodska was true to Anton Lesser's characterisation. cannot abide the RP and emotionless rendition of the other readers - Rodska has exactly the right touch needed. i refuse to purchase the dire, dull readings of the others. even the few minures of their sample readings was repellent to my ears. am sticking to Rodska's ironic, wry, humourous interoretation, perfectly in keeping with Lindsey Davis' writing...

Entertaining.

Good mystery /murder with an Ancient Roman twist. Great characters, so I found I had a real interest in their welfare. Fantastic narrator , easy to listen to and managed to squeeze every ounce of humour out in all the right places. Liked it enough to buy the next in series.

Enjoyable tale but grating performance

A great bedtime story but let down by some grating characterizations. I'll stick with the printed versions in future.

Piggy in the Middle

This is the first of the Falco books I have read (with my ears). The story moves fast and the characters are well drawn I loved Falco's attitude to life and the frequent snide remarks. This story was fun, not easy to see who the real baddie was and the romantic story was very satisfying, well worth a read.

Too confusing in parts, wrong narrator

I didn't like narration personally and it made it feel like my dasmd was reading the story to me. The story progressed quickly but the chase sequences were too muddled and confusing

Adventure and romance in Rome

Great story you really start to love Marcus Didius Falcus although maybe not quite at the start. It was a great adventure and I loved all the Roman details.

Wonderful narration by Christian Rodska.

Murder, Mystery and Mayhem in First Century Rome!

I know of the Falco novels since they were first published. The research by the author is meticulous and adds weight and authenticity to a gripping story.

Falco, our hero, is a very believable character, and more than a little put-upon. He manages to take you, the listener with him as he negotiates his way through the various twists and turns of the plot, collecting a few beatings along the way, as well as imparting some telling insights into the realities of human nature.

I'm biased, I like the Falco Novels anyway!
