Summary

Starting a new life in Snowdonia was always DI Ruth Hunter's dream. Until a twisted killer turned it into her worst nightmare.

Detective Inspector Ruth Hunter lives with the pain of her partner’s mysterious and unsolved disappearance. About to hit 50, the veteran police officer trades in the crime-ridden streets of London for a more peaceful life in rural North Wales. But Ruth has barely settled into her new position in North Wales Police, when the body of a brutally murdered woman is discovered...with strange symbols carved into her skin. Teaming up with an obstinate deputy, Ruth struggles to eliminate anyone from a long line of suspects. When another slain victim is discovered with the same cryptic markings, she’s forced to re-think the investigation.

Has Ruth got what it takes to solve the case before the murderer attacks again?

The Snowdonia Killings is the first book in the DI Ruth Hunter Crime Thriller series and set against the majestic backdrop of Snowdonia, a timeless land of Arthurian legend, folklore, and myth. If you like dark police procedurals, psychologically complex characters, and shocking twists, then you’ll love Simon McCleave’s pulse-pounding debut novel.

Any Welsh speaker could not listen to this.

I have no complaints about the story in the book but the pronunciation of the Welsh words is absolutely awful. It is so bad that I can't understand half of them. I should add I am a Welsh speaker. I couldn't finish listening to the book because of the narration. Why on earth didn't the author get a Welsh speaker to do it.

Story yes, narrator… hmmmm

The enjoyment of this book was somewhat marred by the lack of correct Welsh pronunciations. It’s a shame that a narrator wasn’t used who could correctly pronounce the place names and translations. This would be perfectly acceptable for the English characters in the book, but not the Welsh ones and the narrative. There were some occasions when the voice did grate, usually during the parts of the book with high emotion or tension, and the main character sometimes seemed too abrupt and sharp.
North Wales born and bred, and living in the area I otherwise enjoyed the way the story was set in well documented recognisable locations. The storyline did keep the listener guessing and on the whole I enjoyed it, and will continue to follow the series.

Why is this book censored???

Would love to listen to the other books in this series but the annoying beeping out of some words has put me right off!
I dont subscribe to Audible to be treated like a child! If you are worried about some of the language in a book just put a warning on it!
WHAT A SHAME! And shame on you Audible!

Great story but Welsh pronunciation of place names could do with some work!

All in all very good but a little annoying when Welsh place names pronounced incorrectly but then as a Welsh speaker from Snowdonia I'm probably being too harsh!

Twisting tale

I really enjoyed the twists and turns in the story. I am Welsh speaking and living in the area the book was situated I was put off by the very bad Welsh pronunciations of the places, it jarred with me and took away from the enjoyment somewhat. Having a narrator who could pronounce the words better would have added to my enjoyment, although she did a good job of using a variety of voices in her narrative.

Stopped halfway through Chapter one

When the narrator said the teachers parents were from Trinidad Jamaica I could not believe my ears. Left me feeling if you couldn’t get that right it didn’t bode well for the rest of the book!

Accents sometimes off-putting

My first audible book and nearly didn’t get passed the first few chapters. The narrator when voicing one of the police reminded me of one of the kids in Fireman Sam. I will probably purchase another book by this author as I did become engaged with what happens with the main characters but hopefully there will be a different narrator.

Refreshing premise, but terrible choice of narrator

As a massive crime fiction fan from North Wales, I have been waiting for a North Wales-based crime novel for a long time. Reading the description, I was excited to try this book.

But why on earth has a narrator who clearly doesn’t speak Welsh been chosen? Obviously the book isn’t in wealth, but someone with a least, a basic understanding of Welsh pronunciation. she sounds like a good narrator in general, but this is unacceptable and quite frankly disrespectful towards the Welsh language. Also, why are racist terms being beeped out? if they are written in the book, they need to be said.
