About this listen
Dan Riley is a major in the British Army. After a six month tour of duty in Afghanistan, he is coming home to the wife and young daughters he adores. The outside world sees those reunions as a taste of heaven after months of hell. But are they? Can a man trained to fight adjust again to family and domestic life? And how will the family cope, if he can't? How much, indeed, can Alexa, Dan's wife, sacrifice her own needs and fulfilment to serve his commitment to a way of life that demands everything not just of him, but of her and the children as well? This novel takes a keen look at the home lives of the modern Army. What happens, these days, when love and a vocation collide, head on?

disappointing
What did you like best about The Soldier's Wife? What did you like least?
I quite liked the storyline but as a book by Joanna Trollope, it was disappointing. I usually love he books.
What did you like best about this story?
It was different.
How could the performance have been better?
I found the reader's voice very irritating and she really didn't sound as if she had any idea how to deliver a story. The expression was all wrong.
Was The Soldier's Wife worth the listening time?
Not really

An ok story.
Not a strong and engaging story.. I thought it all fairly predictable. Other books by this author had more engaging stories. Just a personal view.

Joanna back on form.
I read all of Joanna Trollope's earlier novels as they came out. Then there was a long period of indifferent writing and disappointment. I have loved every word of "The Soldier's Wife" and it is great to,see Ms Trollope writing so eloquently again about contemporary issues to do with relationships, vocational careers and modern demands. Thank you!

Superficial Story
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I persevered with this book and listened to the end. Lucky I listen while commuting or falling asleep so it is down time.
Has The Soldier's Wife put you off other books in this genre?
No, but it has put me off Joanna Trollope books as this was the first one I have listened to and it didn't impress me.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was fine
If this book were a film would you go see it?
no
Any additional comments?
I superficial story with very surface level characters. I felt little depth of character and found them frustrating. Story was bland with little to write home about.

The Surprise of the Year
Although I have read and enjoyed many of her books, I only bought this book because I am 'a soldiers' wife'. The surprise for me was just how enjoyable this audio book is- so much so that I have told more people about this book than any other this year. Joanna Trollope seems to understand army life from the family standpoint so well that if somebody told me that she was an army wife then I wouldn't be surprised. Yet the beauty of her writing is that it really isn't about the army as much as about all those careers that regularly separate families and then bring them together, sometimes under stressful conditions. My husband is French but the story could just as well have been set in Paris because the story, the emotions it touches are universal - read it, you won't be disappointed.

Very touching
I heard an interview with Joanna Trollope and an Army wife before I heard this book, in which the author was delighted with the comments of the Army wife that she had all her facts (including the emotional elements) spot-on. I found it an extremely human and humane tale, which gave me great food for thought. Excellent narration, too.
