Summary
Laura Shepherd-Robinson's The Square of Sevens is an epic and sweeping novel set in Georgian high society, a dazzling story offering up mystery, intrigue, heartbreak, and audacious twists.
‘This is your story, Red. You must tell it well . . .’
A girl known only as Red, the daughter of a Cornish fortune-teller, travels with her father making a living predicting fortunes using the ancient method: the Square of Sevens. When her father suddenly dies, Red becomes the ward of a gentleman scholar.
Now raised as a lady amidst the Georgian splendour of Bath, her fortune-telling is a delight to high society. But she cannot ignore the questions that gnaw at her soul: who was her mother? How did she die? And who are the mysterious enemies her father was always terrified would find him?
The pursuit of these mysteries takes her from Cornwall and Bath to London and Devon, from the rough ribaldry of the Bartholomew Fair to the grand houses of two of the most powerful families in England. And while Red's quest brings her the possibility of great reward, it also leads her into grave danger . . .

A phenomenal yarn, filled with intrigue and greed. Great sense of period and complex character.

Fantastic
Best book I've listened to in a very long time. Great story, richly described, intriguing characters, great twist at the end. The characters brought to life by the fabulous narration. I couldn't stop listening, so sad I've finished the book

Thoroughly enjoyed
The story slowly unfurls to reveal an interesting web of characters. The book kept my attention throughout, and I might just listen to it again to get more of the clues.

Intriguing
Intriguing book with lots of surprises.
Historical novels are not normally my choice, but I’m so glad I chose it.
I loved it. The narrator was fab and did the book justice.

Amazingly well written novel
I would say "What's not to like"? about this book, but the nit-picking part of my mild OCD says that the few mispronounciations are a tiny bug bear of mine. However, that aside, this is one of the best books I have listened to lately, especially an author new to my library. Not only is the plot so full of believable twists and turns, the ultimate twist is spectacular!
I was also mildly affected by the links to my personal lifetime in this novel...I WAS born in Staffordshire; I used to run a Catholic social club, which reportedly had priest holes that ran to the outer walls of the castle (there are now only small parts of the outer walls left); having left the social club, I now live on the Staffordshire/Cheshire border and can view many Cheshire country mansions within a few minutes drive; I am also only 2 minutes drive from Mow Cop Castle, which is not in fact, a ruin of a castle, but a folly and makes a good day out during dry weather; and last, but certainly not least, I am a practising Wiccan and fascinated by the days gone by stories of alleged "witchcraft". I shall most certainly be investing in some of the other books mentioned.
Overall, this was a most enjoyable, desperate to know what happens next, novel and I shall look forward to other novels by this wonderfully imaginative author. One of the most exciting novels I've heard for a long time. Bravo!

What a treat
I love LSR’s books, i was anticipating this one and so so pleased! Such a brilliant book. Its an epic, and i think the narrator does great - I sense at times she tires, as its a mammoth reading. Neither disappoint at all - can’t wait for another!
