Disappointing - Written with TV Series in Mind
Very disappointed - I expected much more from Richard Osman who comes across on TV as articulate and intellectual. Don't get me wrong, it's not a terrible book - just not a good one, and in my opinion, life is too short to waste on anything other than 'good' fiction. I had read the hype surrounding the book, and heard a Radio 4 interview with Osman and Jacqueline Wilson, who made it clear she thought it was a work of genius - she actually used the word 'genius' several times! That sold it to me, and I couldn't wait to read it. The reality is what you might call a 'holiday read'. I think it was almost 'childish' in writing style and character creation and development, and the plot felt contrived and cliched. I wonder if it had started out as something better and more 'grown up' but was subjected to extreme editiing to make it more appealing to a mass market. It was clearly written with a Sunday evening, TV series in mind, and it seems this is in the pipeline, along with a second book. If you are looking for something to pass the time whilst lying on a sun lounger, then it will do the job, but don't expect to feel that your life has been enriched or enhanced when you finish it; and that is what I hope for when I use precious hours of my life to read a novel.

A must read/listen
What a fantastic story - I bought it because I love Richard Osman TV programmes and though he would write an interesting book - but it is fantastic - beautifully written, gently humorous, poignant full of twists and turns but most of all confirms the fact that older people’s younger minds still inhabit their, now creaking, bodies!

So enjoyed this crime thriller. So refreshing
This was, an excellent read. Roll on the next. Much more than a crime novel although all the twists and turns were excellent. The characters are so endearing. It also raises issues in these times such as class difference. So well written in such an empathetic manner. It encompasses the decade in such an intelligent way. The bonus was of all the different love stories. Will preorder the next one for sure. Particularly liked Joyce's journals which added a new dimension to the book. Wonderful insight too in to people of a certain age. Richard Osman is a gem.

Was expecting a lot more from this. Pretty disappointing at seemingly at constant tangents throughout. Don’t get the hype at all.

narration was exceptional, cracking story
The narration on this book was truly wonderful, all characters have their own clear distinct personality and the story telling was mesmerising. it's a fabulous story with a brilliant humour that captivates, is relevant and identifiable.

Was a little slow building up...lots of characters...Liked the plot of older people who have lived interesting lives...Some very tender, heartbreaking moments amongst the amusing references to older generation not familiar or up to date with current social media etc etc references

What a delight
Excellent - such fun and what a delight to spend time with such cleverly drawn characters. Lesley Manville is perfectly cast as Joyce, the narrator. Looking forward to the next one, please don't make us wait too long, I will very much miss spending time in their company.

Murder mystery with a difference
I loved this book. A murder mystery with a bit of a difference - solved by the residents of a posh care home. The characters are great and some really humorous parts as well. Can’t wait for the next one.
