Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Trans people in Britain today have become a culture war 'issue'. Despite making up less than one per cent of the country's population, they are the subjects of a toxic and increasingly polarised 'debate', which generates reliable controversy for newspapers and talk shows. This media frenzy conceals a simple fact: that we are having the wrong conversation, a conversation in which trans people themselves are reduced to a talking point and denied a meaningful voice.

In this powerful new book, Shon Faye reclaims the idea of the 'transgender issue' to uncover the reality of what it means to be trans in a transphobic society. In doing so, she provides a compelling, wide-ranging analysis of trans lives from youth to old age, exploring work, family, housing, healthcare, the prison system and trans participation in the LGBTQ+ and feminist communities, in contemporary Britain and beyond.

The Transgender Issue is a landmark work that signals the beginning of a new healthier conversation about trans life. It is a manifesto for change and a call for justice and solidarity between all marginalised people and minorities. Trans liberation, as Faye sees it, goes to the root of what our society is and what it could be; it offers the possibility of a more just, free and joyful world for all of us.

a masterclass

insightful, brilliantly reasoned and argued and entirely predicts events which impacted and reduced longstanding trans rights 2 years after its publication. The author clearly knows their stuff and makes the topic relatable to cis people like me.

Excellent. A well-argued and insightful examination of trans lives.

Definitely worth reading. An important reminder of the lives impacted by the trans identity debate.

The most book on feminism and politics needed now

I was endlessly impressed at how eloquently Shon Faye presented complex ideas in The Transgender Issue, and how the book got more interesting with every chapter - especially after the prologue, which is brilliant in itself. This is not a biography and is in no way "just" about trans issues and rights: it covers political topics that affect anyone in our society. A must read and instant classic, read beautifully.

Brilliant

A wonderfully written and read book about the issues and traumas faced by trans people. Shon talks eloquently about the politics which harm trans people and prevent them from safely embracing who they are.

Equal parts inspiring and horrific

I had this book recommended to me by several friends as the go to text for Allies looking to understand more about the struggles of trans people. Wow, those recommendations were spot on!

Shon writes brilliantly and her narration is perfect. The book is both inspirational from the point of view of what trans people have to put up with, yet at the same time horrific that they are not just allowed to be who they are without challenge.

This book should be mandatory reading or listenjng for all MPs, Peers and public servants. It should also be a set text in schools and required as part of rehabilitation for those convicted of hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people.

I would highly recommend this book in either written or audio form, especially for fellow Allies.
