About this listen

After the success of their desperate mission to Salvation's Reach, Colonel Commissar Gaunt and the Tanith First race to the strategically vital forge world of Urdesh, besieged by the brutal armies of Anarch Sek. However, there may be more at stake than just a planet. The Imperial forces have made an attempt to divide and conquer their enemy, but with Warmaster Macaroth himself commanding the Urdesh campaign, it is possible that the Archenemy assault has a different purpose to decapitate the Imperial command structure with a single blow. Has the Warmaster allowed himself to become an unwitting target? And can Gaunt's Ghosts possibly defend him against the assembled killers and war machines of Chaos?

a homerun

Loved it, one of Abnetts best Gaunt stories to date. nice to get a glimpse at the Imperial Guard high command.

Reliable.content but patchy delivery

it's more Gaunt's ghosts - if you liked the previous ones you'll probably like this too. I did. There's not a lot more to say this far into the series. If you haven't read/heard the earlier entries start there.

The narrator does a great job when narrating, a solid job when voicing Gaunt or the main ghosts, and should (unfortunately) never be asked to do voices for women and children ever again for the love of the throne. The otherwise good reading lapses into pantomime.

More losses for the ghosts

It's been awhile since I last read a gaunts ghosts novel but was very enjoyable. Dan Abnett doesn't pull the punches but without jeapody there is no excitement. Narration was good.

Stilted reading, great story

A stop start performance but once you get used to it it's easy to enjoy a story that throws the Ghosts straight back into the thick of the action and raising the stakes for the régiment. A great return to form.

Much better than the reviews would have you believe

So after listening to the book the whole way through, I can honestly say that this book is good! It’s a more character driven story than some of the other books which is fine for me because I find the characters as interesting as the situations they are in. The action is visceral and brutal when it happens. Let’s talk about the narration. A lot of people here don’t like it because it isn’t Toby, but Mr Stewart is far far better than the last guy we had for salvations reach which was truly difficult to listen to. I would have much preferred Stewart over that Scottish guy and as a Scot myself, fuck me that was awful. We have been spoiled by Mr Longworth’s stellar narrations but Stewart is an equally skilled orator in my humble Opinion. His take on some characters can be quite off from what we have gotten used to but he is taking them seriously as characters. I think that a lot of listeners are still quite pissed of from the awful narration we had for salvations reach and so are skating Stewart very unfairly. It’s a good listen with a good narrator so definitely don’t be put off from picking it up. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great story amazing insights.

struggled to enjoy the story as a whole. I understand changing narrators but does audible not make new narrators at least listen to one of the stories so they understand how to pronounce things properly. especially for a book as pivotal as this one. dropped the ball big time.

Amazing as always

great stuff as always. Action and characters you love and hate. And love to hate.
big surprises and some real shifts that keep the ongoing series feeling fresh.
please don't make us wait so long for the next one.
I'm getting old. I might die soon. I want to read the end of the story

Great story….tough narration

I’ll start and say I didn’t mind the change or narration for the previous book it was odd but I got my head around it. But this one is trickier! I really struggled with the narration. Gaunt sounds wrong, Ludd like a child, Verghast nothing like the other books, and the remaining Ghosts, or the female characters well….

Great scene setting story though….onto the next one!
