It's only by embracing our darker emotions—as well as the light—that we discover our deepest meaning and connection, love and joy. It can change the way we work, the way we create and the way we love—for it is the hidden source of our love stories, moonshots and masterpieces.

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose and my strength, but also to finding my voice in a world that didn't always see me. As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. They are bogarted, reinvented to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone who is searching for a way to understand and overcome a complicated past, let go of shame and find acceptance.

A tragic but beautifully written story

Summary
Oprah's Book Club pick
A New York Times best seller
Best-selling author, life coach and sociologist Martha Beck explains why 'integrity' - being in harmony with ourselves - is the key to a meaningful and joyful life.
In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us - people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits - all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.
Inspired by The Divine Comedy, Beck uses Dante's classic hero's journey as a framework to break down the process of attaining personal integrity into small, manageable steps. She shows how to read our internal signals that lead us towards our true path, and to recognize what we actually yearn for versus what our culture sells us.
With techniques tested on hundreds of her clients, Beck brings her expertise as a social scientist, life coach and human being to help readers to uncover what integrity looks like in their own lives. She takes us on a spiritual adventure that not only will change the direction of our lives, but bring us to a place of genuine happiness.

Exquisite and practical - a treasure
I’d been feeling really low, and on reaching out to a great friend I’d explained how I perceived inner conflict within me, and she suggested I’d like this book and she bought it for me. This has been the most perfect book to help lift me from intense internal mental conflict. I found it relatable, realistic, practical, and overall, optimistic. It’s helping me feel grounded that my inner pain has a purpose, and the purpose is leading me to peace on earth. I have a paper copy too as an extra reference for the exercises. Here’s the key - don’t just listen to it, actually DO the exercises. Or at least do some as you listen once, then you’ll likely feel the pull of integrity to go listen again and do them all.

Life-changing (no, really)
I've read more than my fair share of 'self-help' books, in search of meaning, answers and methods I could apply to my life. Not one of them has come close to really speaking to me, inspiring me and inciting me like this one. Even though I knew little about Martha Beck until I read it, I immediately connected with her style and her take on life and how to live with integrity (spoiler alert: it's much much more than the moral integrity we are used to using that word for). I've listened all through, three times now. I make positive changes to my life on every listen. I may only ever listen to this one book until I've burned through all my hell gates! Thank you, Martha. Truly.

Elixir for Lionhearts
How to describe such an all encompassing book of wisdom told in an incredibly engaging way. Part of me wants to thrust it into the hands of everyone I know but instead I'm putting it on repeat.
There was only one short section where the integrity of the story felt 'off'...which was in Chapter 14 where Martha has a 'we are dooooomed' rant, but this tangent is redeemed in the final Chapter and maybe was an intentional reality check.
Otherwise the book rang so, so true.
Thankyou Martha Beck.

I found the whole book a wonderful transformative experience.
It was an honest and open journey where Martha lay her struggles and challenges for all to read /listen and move forward with her . All paralleled with Dante and his journey.
The exercises along the way allowed the listener to stop, reflect and question where they are at that moment in their lives.
Loved it. Thank you Martha
