About this listen
When a mysterious puppet show arrives in Bishop's Lacey, death is not far behind... a grisly murder during a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk in the village hall reaches back to an earlier crime that has cast a shadow over the village for years. Flavia's investigations test her powers of deduction to the limit - and provide a shocking insight into the darker corners of the adult world.

Brilliant book
I nearly didn't buy this book, as the title was fairly off-putting, but I'm so glad I did... The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag is a murder mystery, and the elements that really made this book stand out were the strength of the lead character, Flavia, and Alan Bradley's writing. He really does manage to evoke 1950's England, and although this is quite a dark book in places, there are also flashes of humour. All in all, it reminded me a little of Agatha Christie. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys well-written crime fiction.

A worthwhile second volume
Though slow to get going, the plot in this one has a few more twists than did the first in this series. Many characters still seem a touch two-dimensional and stereotypical, but Sophie Aldred's excellent narration hides much of this.

Really Enjoyable
This is not the sort of book that I would usually pick up, but I really did enjoy it. Sophie Aldred narrates beautifully and does a great job of all the voices. Flavia, the main character is a young girl and the author manages to imbue her with both exceptional knowledge of poisions and insight while retaining her childish innocence, which works very well.

Unbelievable - glowing reviews here and on Amazon
I can hardly believe that I have been reading the same book that has been reviewed here and on Amazon. I found the tale daft to say the least, the narrator (who was also the heroine) irritating in the extreme. I was tempted to give up on the book, but partly because of the reviews felt that I must be missing something and it would all become worthwhile in the end. I wish I had followed my original instincts, None of the characters was likeable, least of all, the precocious and obnoxious 11 year old Flavia, who was such a genius she ran rings around everyone. Definitely not for me!
