Summary

A summer house party turns into a thrilling whodunit when Jane Austen's Mr. Wickham—one of literature’s most notorious villains—meets a sudden and suspicious end in this brilliantly imagined mystery featuring Austen’s leading literary characters.

“Had Jane Austen sat down to write a country house murder mystery, this is exactly the book she would have written.”—Alexander McCall Smith

The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a party at their country estate, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.

Nearly everyone at the house party is a suspect, so it falls to the party’s two youngest guests to solve the mystery: Juliet Tilney, the smart and resourceful daughter of Catherine and Henry, eager for adventure beyond Northanger Abbey; and Jonathan Darcy, the Darcys’ eldest son, whose adherence to propriety makes his father seem almost relaxed. In this tantalizing fusion of Austen and Christie, from New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray, the unlikely pair must put aside their own poor first impressions and uncover the guilty party—before an innocent person is sentenced to hang.

Agatha Austen

A bestselling Star Wars fiction author writes a Christie/Austen mash up, it shouldn't work but it does. Gray throws in practically every Austen character you can think of and it's a delight to meet them all once more. If your a fan of Jane and can take the premise you are in for a treat. Not as worthy as Death Comes to Pemberley but far more entertaining in my opinion. I do hope there will be a sequel. Brilliant.

Austen meets Christie

An really enjoyable country house murder mystery which not only features Jane Austen's characters but remains faithful to the style of Austen and social structures of polite society in regency England. There are of course many Pride and Prejudice follow ups, but this book manages to follow up on the whole of the Austen canon. Having read all the works of Austen many many years ago, I realised that I recalled the details of some plots more clearly than others - so the opening Prologue was useful as a reminder.

The young detectives are of course frustrated by the strict limitations of regency propriety, and are willing on occasion to push the boundaries - but their mind set and their actions remain firmly true to the era in which they live. I particularly appreciated the way in which young Darcy wrestled with life: he is clearly (in contemporary parlance) "on the spectrum" but we see him coping with this without the advantage of modern understanding or vocabulary.

My first Claudia Gray novel. She has clearly tried her hand at a number of genres - I may not tackle her Star Wars novels. But I look forward to more in the Tilney/Darcy series.

Justice

How I enjoyed this book. The plot was intriguing, characters like old friends and the language and style of the author did justice to the writings of Jane Austen. There was one familiar villain and many heroes in this compelling story. Now I want to read all Jane Austen’s novels again. Well done and more please!!

good light-hearted listen

To meet again Austen's characters in a Christy-esque house party murder mystery was a brilliant crossing of genres.
The narration was very well done.
However, an inconsistency in chapter numeration led to a small irritation. This is something quite common in audible books, where the introduction etc classed as Chapter 1 and the Chapter list is not amended. Hence I listened to a large chunk twice as I tried to find my place over several devices.
