About this listen

Selected from sermons delivered by C. S. Lewis during World War II, these nine addresses show the beloved author and theologian bringing hope and courage in a time of great doubt. "The Weight of Glory", considered by many to be Lewis’s finest sermon of all, is an incomparable explication of virtue, goodness, desire, and glory.

Also included are: “Transposition”, “On Forgiveness”, “Why I Am Not a Pacifist”, and “Learning in War-Time”, in which Lewis presents his compassionate vision of Christianity in language that is both lucid and compelling.

Clive Staples (C. S.) Lewis (1898–1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the 20th century and arguably the most influential Christian writer of his day. His major contributions in literary criticism, children’s literature, fantasy literature, and popular theology brought him international renown and acclaim. He wrote more than 30 books, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include The Chronicles of Narnia, Out of the Silent Planet, The Screwtape Letters, and Mere Christianity.

Another wonderful book by c.s. Lewis.

Lewis' philosophical insights to many aspects of life are without compare in modern literature.

Sought-for jewels in insight

I am being wonderfully enriched by this collection of essays (voiced sermons). The cogency of the great man's arguments and the lucidity of expression are a constant wonder and each 20-minute talk bears multiple repetition and long reflection.

Profoundly influential.

It doesn't get much more significant than much of what is examined in this. Lewis floods so much seemingly ordinary stuff with huge quantities of biblical light.

Some great wisdom and depth of thinking

There is great insight in this and I enjoyed it. It is a series of addresses/lectures given so I found it helpful to listen individual chapters at a time.

Always thought-provoking

Originally published as a collection of five addresses, this edition of The Weight of Glory includes four extra addresses and miscellaneous non-fiction pieces, plus an introduction by compiler Walter Hooper. While the quality and significance of the individual pieces is understandbly uneven given the collection's somewhat haphazard genesis, addresses such as 'The Weight of Glory' and 'Why I Am Not a Pacifist' deserve a place in any Lewis anthology. The introduction, in which Walter Hooper recounts the time he spent with Lewis towards the end of his life, makes a fine addition to the volume. Recommended for those who are already familiar with Lewis's non-fiction.
