Summary

In a valley steeped in legend lies an abandoned house where Edens may be lost, found and remade....

The White Valley in the far west of Cornwall cuts deeply through bluebell woods down to the sea. The house above the beach has lain neglected since the war. It comes with a reputation, which is why Mila and her mother, Magda, acquire it so cheaply in the fateful summer of 1954.

Magda plans to restore the house to its former glory: the venue for glittering parties, where the rich and celebrated gathered for bracing walks by day and sumptuous cocktails by night. Mila's ambitions, meanwhile, are much less grand; she dreams of creating a safe haven for herself, and a happy home for her little girl, Janey.

The White Valley comes with a long, eventful history, laced with tall tales. Locals say that a white hare may be seen running through the woods there; to some, she's an ill omen, to others a blessing. Feeling fragile and broken-hearted, Mila is in need of as many blessings as she can get. But will this place provide the fresh start she so desperately needs?

Great Story

I found in the end the pronounciation of quite basic words annoying....daimler became dimler, dahlia became darlia, illuminating became lumin just to quote a few.

Engaging tale

I chose this as I had previously enjoyed other books by the author. The story did not disappoint at all, but having grown up in the area, the mispronunciation of place names and surnames was distracting. The descriptions of places took me straight back to my childhood with yearning and the interweaving of history, folklore and natural magic made for a satisfying and engaging listen.

Disappointing

I was looking forward to this story but unfortunately I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped after reading the summary of the novel. Predictable and slow. Also I think the narrator wasn’t the voice for this book.

There are some mispronounced words which jarr a little when listening to the story

Excellent

Fantastic story well written. I picked this on a whim from the 2 for 1 sale and am so glad I did. Highly recommended.

So enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this, it’s a perfect ‘holiday’ audiobook. The characters are complex but somehow innocent and very likeable, the addition of a five year old child is relevant and adds to the story. Jane Johnson has never failed to entertain me and I’m always left looking forward to the next book available from her.

Really enjoyed this

I almost didn't buy this book. The reviews said the narration was poor, words mispronounced etc, but actually I thought the story was beautifully read, It must be so difficult to speak the words of a five year old child, but the narrator did a pretty good job.
Don't be put off, it's a good tale.

Lovely story

I loved this book. Beautifully written and with a weave of fork lore and spirituality. The narrator’s voice was fine, but found mispronunciations and her habit of stressing the wrong words in sentences a little distracting. Not enough to spoil enjoyment though.

Ok, a bit disappointing

I have loved everything I’ve read by this author apart from this book. I stuck with it to the end but found it predictable. The reader puts on a very annoying babyish voice for the 5 year old daughter.

Beautifully magic

I have loved this book in so many ways. It is a story of people who have their own stories, backgrounds and histories entwined with historic and magical land. I finished it in 5 days and when it ended I wanted more.
Spooky in some places to enlightenment in others. If you like witches and pagans and healing with herbs than this book is for you.
