Summary
When life seemed its worst, Gresham awaited.
Julia Hollis’ opulent life in Victorian London crashes to pieces when her husband passes away. Worse, she is told by his bankers that he gambled away their fortune. Now the family’s hope rests on The Larkspur, an old abandoned coaching inn in the quaint village of Gresham.

Easy listening
A pleasant story and easy to pick up from where you left.
I assume the author is American as there were several American words which did not fit with a story set in 19th century England such as ' candy' and 'stoop' . The pronunciation of several words by the narrator we're also American although the narrator sounded English. It is a story with a Christian message which may not suit everyone although it did not bother me particularly.
An easy listening novel, the first in a series it would appear.

Beautiful writing and beautifully told.
I’m delighted to have found another excellently-written and read historical Christian fiction. I’ll definitely read more by this author.

Confused
This is a very American book - peoples names - Willa, Laurel, Norwood, Ilda not known or used in the UK. Terminology - school lunch recess (lunch time / break) yard ( playground) to name two. Traditions and pronunciation were very UNEnglish yet the place names are English. The story is surgery sweet and, a little way in, lapsed into an attempt at religious conversion. It is as though by changing the place names the publishers thought they could open up a whole new market. It doesn’t work. It’s confusing and irritating.
Servants didn’t call their mistresses ‘Mrs’. It was either Mrs Hollins, madam or possibly though rarely even Miss Julia but not ‘misses’. Will avoid this writer in future.
