About this listen

Discover a new series of whodunits by million-selling author Faith Martin. These charming mysteries will have you scratching your head to work out who the murderer is.

Meet Jenny Starling: travelling cook and reluctant amateur detective.

Please note: This book was first published as A Fatal Fall of Snow under Faith Martin’s pen name Joyce Cato.

Jenny Starling is spending Christmas in a snowed-in country house cooking all the traditional food she loves. But the family she’s working for are not full of the seasonal spirit. In fact, they seem to hate each other.

On Christmas Eve, someone is found dead on the kitchen table. And the head of the family is blaming Jenny!

But with an incompetent detective called in, and seemingly no motive for the murder, Jenny will have to give the police a hand.

She will stop at nothing to clear her name and find the real murderer.

This is the second of a series of gripping murder mysteries with a great cast of characters and baffling crimes which will keep you in suspense to the final minute.

Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey, and J. R. Ellis.

Comfortable listen

A quite enjoyable listen with good character . Unfortunately only downside was the very predicted outcome.

A solid if not spectacular follow up

I enjoyed the first of the Jenny Starling series and very quickly bought the second book. I still liked the book but for some reason didn't find it as engaging as the first. Could have been the set up, the victim and the range of suspects made a simpler mystery but it did feel the clues as to why were much much more obvious. It devalued the main character a little as it felt she should have put the pieces together much earlier.

I like the set up of Jenny being a travelling cook as I think its a good way to allow a non detective to get in these types of situation. However this job didn't feel right for the character who was a top cook and could pick her jobs.

My other gripe with book two is it felt much more heavy handed with saying the main character was fat but pretty. The first book painted Jenny as a beautiful woman who had a striking appearance as she was tall and not skinny. It made her come across as clever, sharp, strong and independent. This book felt like it just focused on her being surprisingly attractive as she was fat. When you set up a strong character and keep focussing on something like their weight it distracts from the Character not strengthens them.

The narrator was good and the right fit for the book.

All in all I liked the book and I am still invested in the character enough to get book 3. I am just less eager than after book 1. A solid book but hoping book 3 expands the character and has a more complex line up of suspects

light and frosty winter whodunit fun

An easy listen and none the worse for it. Engaging characters and a decent story but no good if you're on a diet and trying to avoid mince pies.

murder most entertaining!

A very enjoyable murder mystery, which feels like a classic. Narration was nice fitted well with the theme, however felt tone was a little off in places.

Very entertaining

Very enjoyable, lightweight but entertaining. Only annoying thing is her obsession with her cooks size which does become somewhat tedious

Thrilling, entertaining stuff.

Well narrated. However, why is 'he was sat' considered to be correct English?

Worth listening!
