Summary

Leo Carew's debut novel, The Wolf, the first book in the Under the Northern Sky series, is a masterpiece in epic historical fantasy - a new voice to rival David Gemmell or George R. R. Martin.

Violence and death have come to the land under the Northern Sky. The Anakim dwell in the desolate forests and mountains beyond the black river, the land under the Northern Sky. Their ancient ways are forged in Unthank silver and carved in the grey stone of their heartland, their lives measured out in the turning of centuries, not years.

By contrast, the Sutherners live in the moment, their vitality much more immediate and ephemeral than their Anakim neighbours. Fragile is the peace that has existed between these very different races - and that peace is shattered when the Suthern armies flood the lands to the north.

These two races revive their age-old hatred and fear of each other. Within the maelstrom of war, two leaders will rise to lead their people to victory. Only one will succeed.

The Wolf is a thrilling, savagely visceral, politically nuanced and unexpectedly wry exploration of power and identity - and how far one will go to defend them.

Very good read!!

I very much enjoyed this book. I loved the build up and the storyline. Intriguing from the start. The characters were very distinguishable and dramatic... which I love.
I cannot wait to crack on with the sequel!!!

Good story but is not really fantasy

I enjoyed this but it is basically a story about Romans. That’s fine and it’s a good story. No idea why it was decided to make it fantasy. A good book though if you like Romans :)

Entertaining but flawed

Thought the premise was good but at times the execution let it down. Felt the author had a habit of getting bogged down in minutiae and use broad strokes for important plot points for example. The first third of the book built the tension about an impending confrontation between the two forces but once the time for battle arrives it’s a total anticlimax with some details given in subsequent chapters . The main character Roper and quite a few others were a bit flat and emotionless. I also struggled to understand what Bellamus’s motivation was. Maybe in the next books this will become clear but I’m unsure if I will continue the series.

Excellent medieval fantasy

Excellent start to a new mediaeval fantasy series. More focused on battles and less on intrigue, than say, A Game of Thrones, but worth your attention nevertheless.

I only deducted one star from the story rating as I felt the scheming and plotting at the opposing royal courts deserved more time, but perhaps that is to come in the subsequent books in the series.

The narrator is absolutely perfect for this book, doing a very good impression of heroic warriors in the middle of a battle.

Good but not very original

So 1st thing that I noticed with the book was the narrator, with strange inflections on sentences and starting them with a deep growly voice turning to what I consider a normal voice (like Shakira's singing) The story itself was good, but nothing particularly original, if you like game of thrones go for it. it's based in a... well kind of alternate world, again game of thrones, with a mix of roman, viking, medieval and fantasy. Not sure I'll Continue with the series.

Very good looking forward to sequels

Excellent creation. A handful of well crafted characters. Very enjoyable in parts, at times I wanted a little more.
