From atomic structures to theories about magnetic forces, scientific progress has given us a good grasp on the properties of many different materials. However, science cannot tell us how to measure the temperature of steel just by looking at it, or how to sculpt stone into all kinds of shapes, or what it feels like to blow up a balloon of glass. Handmade is the story of materials through making and doing. Author and material scientist Anna Ploszajski journeys into the domain of makers and craftspeople to comprehend how the most popular materials really work.

However, most of us struggle to stay fit, and our attitudes to exercise are plagued by misconceptions, finger-pointing and anxiety. But, as Daniel Lieberman shows in Exercised, the first book of its kind by a leading scientific expert, we never evolved to exercise.

Summary
Random House presents This Audiobook Will Send You to Sleep by Professor K. McCoy and Dr Hardwick, read by Bruce Alexander.
Sleep smarter.
This Audiobook Will Send You to Sleep makes no claims to be fun or interesting. It is an audiobook you can listen to in full confidence that you will find absolutely nothing to stimulate your brain. An audiobook, like no other, that will afford you much sleep and copious amounts of pointless knowledge.
Where else will you hear about the political crisis in Belgium 2007-2011 or study the growth pattern of holly? And from where else can you find, in one place, an overview of railway gauges, a summary of the administrative bureaucracy of the Byzantine Empire and instructions for the creation of a collapsible music stand?
Prepare to fall fast asleep with the most boring audiobook ever published.
Includes soothing soundscape to help send you to sleep.

Unexpectedly effective
I was skeptical about this but also bored of sleep apps not living up to their promises.
This audiobook has been amazing. I’ve never yet had my timer run out before I’ve been asleep, and I can’t imagine imagine to stop using it any time soon.
If you struggle to drop off, then I definitely recommend this audiobook. The content and the narration are wonderful.

Buyer Beware...
This book had one job, but it decided to do something else instead. There is a use for audiobooks as facilitators of slumber, and it may be that people have different preferences, so of course, YMMV in regards to this review. It has not worked for me in the three attempts of listening. For one thing, the narration is slow. Very slow. While this may seem an intuitive method for creating a book that helps people drop off, the result is - for me - counter-productive. The pauses are gaps that create a jarring effect of speech punctuated with silence. The second issue is the subject matter. Each subject, while possibly effective in-and-of themselves, are far too short. They can last five minutes sometimes, before a new subject comes up, often with a different volume setting and speech pattern, having been recorded separately from the previous one. I can never get comfortable listening to any one thing in this book before it alters to something else. This book has taken a comedic turn in an effort at self-reflective humour, and in doing so defeats the purpose it proposes to exist for. I've marked it at three stars as this may still work for some. If you want it as a comedy book to play in front of others for a joke, fine. Don't expect it to do the job it proposes though. Try something like Silk Roads or SPQR for that.

Houston, we have success!
How do you summarise or even begin to try and explain a book like this unimaginably boring title! The authors succeeded in their effort of putting me to sleep within 10 minutes which is the only reason I am troubling to review this title. The text in this book is so unimaginative and immensely doll, I’m not even sure I’ve listened to any of them in their entirety. The book does have the desired effect of ensuring a peaceful, uninterrupted and restful nights sleep which I guess is the whole point! I used to listen to books which even though familiar to me still stimulated my imagination and this often kept me awake into the early hours so I was very pleased to give this one a try. Hopefully by the end of the century I will have made it through the entire length of this book, even the reader who is completely devoid of any character manages to make even these mundane texts more boring than they otherwise would be. Definitely worth a punt if you’re having trouble falling asleep.

Bruce Alexander has a wonderful voice
I was awake early hours this morning, and by chance or fate? this popped into my e mail, so i got it, hoping it would let me get some sleep, as i have a broken rib and its hard to sleep. However, Sadly this did not make me go to sleep. The list things that were said to be boring, started to make me think. Such as The queue in the post office, made me think about how the last thing i posted got lost in the post. I find post offices very stressful. Plus lots of the boring facts i found interesting, like the longest tennis match and the archery award. I do not find walking past cars relaxing. walking in the woods is relaxing.
i just felt cross listening to it all and not relaxed. I will have to return it, as i do not want to put myself through the stress again.
However its one redeeming feature is Bruce Alexander has a wonderful voice. He had the best voice for reading aloud. I shall look for other books narrated by him.

Jut what it says on the tin!
Did exactly what it said it would do. I could listen to a chapter a night and it really helped especially when I was soo stressed out from work and was struggling t sleep. The topics discussed were interesting enough but were definitely boring enough to help lull me into sleep. The narrator was the perfect person for this!

A quarter of the way through the program, I was fast asleep. That is, I think that’s how far I made it. It was a good sleep!
