Summary
One winter's afternoon, Sonia, 43, married and respectable, answers the door to 15-year-old Jez. He’s come to borrow some music. Sonia invites him in and soon decides that she isn't going to let him leave. As Sonia's desire to keep Jez hidden and protected from the outside world becomes all the more overpowering, she is haunted by memories of an intense teenage relationship, which gradually reveal a terrifying truth.
The River House, Sonia's home since childhood, holds secrets within its walls. And outside, on the shores of the Thames, new ones are coming in on the tide...

Very enjoyable read
Great book. This felt just so English and read with just the right accent. Compelling storyline, keeping heightened interest right up to the end. So enjoyed the read that recommended it to my Mum too.

messin' about on the river
This has been my best download for months. A chilling listen backed up with first class narration which does justice to the novel by Penny Hancock who judiciously uses the first person, present tense to take you directly into the mind of protagonist Sonia, a disturbed, middle class individual whose dark past is revealed in stages. Why is she keeping fifteen year old Jez locked up in her riverside house? Events from Sonia’s youth are told in flashback. They feature the charismatic and cruel Seb whose river exploits are central to this tale. The tension is racked up as Sonia tries desperately to avoid being found out, leading her to extreme measures. Recommended listening.

Good Story Sleepy Narration
This audio book is quite good but I must admit I prefer thrillers with a little more pace, the narration and the action are very drawn out - it almost makes me want to drift off to sleep. Yet the story isn't boring and if you stick with it the pressure builds nicely.
The main character, Sonia, holds local 15-year-old boy Jez prisoner as she builds her obsession with him - or rather she believes him to be very like Seb, someone from her past. Sonia is obviously having some sort of psychotic break due to the shadowy events of her teenage years - which are slowly revealed through the book.
Overall this is a good story, far from terrible but not heart poundingly great either. Unlike the other reviewer I wasn't crazy about the narration, it felt too sleepy, but it wasn't bad. Listen to a sample first to decide is the voice is right for you.

Enraptured, couldn't put it down.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I found Tideline a great book, I recommended this book to my daughter, who is enjoying it every bit as I did.
What did you like best about this story?
The whole storyline was brilliant, I loved the detail, of the river and the houses surroundings. It is so well written, I was captured on the first page, and had to read it all.
What does Juanita McMahon and Charlotte Strevens bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I love the audio books. The narrators do a great job. The voices and expression is second to none, as it is so fluently read I am able to concentrate on the detail of the story and let my imagination take in the detail. I always listen to the narration before I purchase a book, as sometimes the accents or tones can spoil the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have listened to this book all in one sitting, a real page turner.
Any additional comments?
Well worth a listen, its not too hard to imagine how the events can proceed, and the situation get out of hand. The explanation of Seth was the cherry on the top. A good listen,

Gripping, grin and fascinating
I think the people who have given this a lower rating due to subject matter are the type of readers who would never like to read about 'distasteful ' subjects. I , however, appreciate the realism within this book and the slow breakdown of the mind. It does cover rather grim topics but then the world can be a grim place. Beautifully read by Charlotte Strevens as usual- I just love her silky seductive voice and she always captures the mood of a novel perfectly.

Unpleasantly dark, dank and depressing
This is my second Penny Hancock book (the first was the rather brilliant The Darkening Hour). This is set in the same area of London circa Greenwich and like the other book Tideline is full of beautiful and evocative descriptions of suburban life beside the Thames. The storyline here however was not something I could easily stomach. It was depressing enough to read about the desperate and futile attempts of a child trying to escape the clutches of a predatory madwoman but when it began exploring a sexual and sadistic relationship between two minors I decided enough was enough. I know this is going to make me sound an insufferable, prude, and perhaps I am, but I think it is really a question of what I want to spend my precious time listening to, and this isn't it. I urge people to give The Darkening Hour a chance though. It really is extremely good.

Has Tideline put you off other books in this genre?
I don't think so but I'd be more wary
Which scene did you most enjoy?

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
