Summary

From the Sunday Times Number One bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches, now a major Sky TV series, a novel about what it takes to become a vampire.

From human to vampire ...

Marcus Whitmore was made a vampire in the eighteenth century. Over two hundred years later, he finds himself in love with Phoebe Taylor, a human who decides to become a vampire herself.

But her transformation will prove as challenging now as it was for Marcus when he first encountered Matthew de Clermont, his sire.

While Phoebe is secreted away, Marcus relives his own journey from the battlefields of the American Revolutionary War, through the treachery of the French Revolution to a bloody finale in New Orleans. His belief in liberty, equality and brotherhood challenged at every stage by the patriarchy of the de Clermonts.

What will he and Phoebe discover in one another when they are finally reunited at Les Revenants, beneath the watchful gaze of Matthew and his wife, Diana Bishop?

Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Deborah Harkness returns to the spellbinding world she created in A Discovery of Witches and, through the prism of an unconventional love story, explores the power of tradition and the endless possibilities for change.

Critic reviews

What a rich, thrilling and educational tale it is... A captivating and romantic ripping yarn (E L James)
This is a glorious, finely-wrought gem of a book: intelligent, thoughtful, intricate... I could lose myself in here and never want to come out: what better accolade can there be? ...Utterly enchanting on every level (Manda Scott)

I’m surprised the different narrator did as well as the first 3 books

I’ve loved all of the all souls book and nearly didn’t buy this one due to some poor reviews. I am so glad that I ignored the few poor reviews because this book explained a lot of the background of the first three books. Brilliantly written and superbly narrated. I loved it.

Times Convert

I have had to come back to this book in the series, I didn’t really enjoy it as much as the trilogy and was said it was Marcus life and not Phillips and Isabos life. But, I enjoyed it this time round. Locked in Covid and winter I reread the four books.
I hope there will be a fifth soon, I await the confirmation

Not as good as the All Souls Trilogy

I wasn’t as grabbed by this as I was with the All Souls Trilogy, unfortunately. I loved the bits about Matthew and Rebecca (less so the precocious twins). Whilst the primary focus is Marcus, and some elements of his story were interesting, Phoebe was the ever-present irritation. I didn’t find her to be a particularly interesting or likeable character in the All Souls Trilogy, and this book has done her no favours. I don’t think I’ll be buying the next book in this series. Such a shame. It’s just not for me.

The narration is ok. Some of the character’s voices are a little too similar. The narrator’s Scottish accent is far superior to that of the narrator of the All Souls Trilogy. On reflection, though, I did prefer the previous narrator of Deborah Harkness’s books.

Amazing story and fantastic narration

Deborah Harkness has a talent like no other. She is able to weave together stories of the fantastic and historic in a way that not only brings the past to life, but leaves ones searching for more and questioning whether vampires, witches and daemons might just live amongst us. Throughout, she captures universal themes with startling clarity. Every read is a joy and a new experience.

Saskia's narration was superb. She brought each character to life and added something I cannot quite name to the story. Her timing and accents were spot on, and though I loved the previous narrator of Deborah Harkness's books, Saskia has brought her own brand of magic to this fantastic performance.

Highly recommended!

Better than anticipated

I think after reading the reviews I was a hit out off, following listening to the trilogy before hand, I know the narrator is different but I still enjoyed the story, it was lovely to hear some more insight going forward with the twins and generally some more of a background story. Hope there will be more, I truly do, makes me wonder what’s up next so many possibilities

loved every minute!

Beautifully performed and the story is beautifully written. This is a great addition to the world that Harkness has weaved in the telling of a Discovery of Witches.

But a warning to those who think this is Diana's story, It is not. It is most definitely Marcus' story, although you will be happy to find that Matthew, Diana and a few others play a great part in it.
I highly recommend this book and the Audio.

Another fabulous story!

I loved finding out more about Marcus and how he became a vampire - to have lived through so much history made for interesting reading. The little diversions to Diana and her children were also enlightening - what would children be like whose parents were a vampire and a witch? Well, we’re given a good idea!
Phoebe’s transition from human to vampire was also interesting - an interesting juxtaposition to Marcus’ own transition.
I hope this is the start of more books in this world. Personally, I love them.
