Summary

From USA Today best-selling author Gigi Pandian comes a modern tale of ancient intrigue.

Unpacking her belongings in her new hometown of Portland, Oregon, herbalist and reformed alchemist Zoe Faust can't help but notice she's picked up a stowaway. Dorian Robert-Houdin is a living, breathing three-and-half-foot gargoyle—not to mention a master of French cuisine—and he needs Zoe's expertise to decipher a centuries-old text. Zoe, who's trying to put her old life behind her, isn't so sure she wants to reopen her alchemical past ... until the dead man on her porch leaves her no choice.

Delightful tale

A very sweet and engaging story. Beautifully narrated. A very pleasant listen. My only negative response is the narrator constantly pronouncing the word herb as ‘erb’ as if the H doesn’t exist. And the word herb comes up in the book a lot.

From the past into the present

Escapist fun … with herbs & magic . The presenter masters voices and accents with an agreeable tone. The story skips over the centuries and between continents with ease.

Truly wonderful!

I really loved this book and am delighted to see that it's the first in a series. The Accidental Alchemist is a delightful blend of mystery and fantasy and it contains some endearing characters, particularly a French gargoyle who is alive although, unless a cure can be found from a missing book, he faces a living death trapped inside his body which is trying to turn back to stone. The narration is perfect and I can't wait to listen to book two!

I couldn’t turn it off. I Listened until 02.30am. Enjoyed it tremendously, with lots of twists in the tale.

Reasonably enjoyable story

Th story was reasonably enjoyable, but a very large amount of unnecessary details of the protagonist's vegan views, vegan cookery tips and the protagonist's dress sense distract from the story at times. I don't object to them in principle and indeed at times the cookery works, but it feels a little shoehorned in at others. As a non-american, the narrator's frequent mentions of "erbs" could get quite grating. I found the narration of many of the characters didn't serve to make them likeable, although I think Dorian was the exception to this. Overall a fine listen but I won't be in a rush to get another in the series.
