About this listen

One by one, three waterlogged suitcases were pulled from the Chesapeake Bay. In each were body parts of a man. In a forensics room, the truth was discovered: William McGuire had been horribly murdered and dismembered.

William and his loving wife, a registered nurse named Melanie, had just closed on their New Jersey dream home. Little did William know about the nightmare that was in store . . . . For Melanie had been involved in a long-term affair with a married doctor at the fertility clinic where she worked - and she had plans for the future that didn't include William.

Investigators believe that on April 29, 2004, Melanie first drugged her husband, then murdered him in cold blood. Three years after America witnessed the details of the suitcase incident unfold - on 48 Hours, Dateline NBC, and ABC Primetime, and in People magazine, among other news outlets - Melanie was convicted of first-degree murder and desecrating human remains. To Have and to Kill is the true story of a marriage that turned deadly . . . .

Excellent story

Fascinating telling of this case and great narration. It’s left me with more questions than answers regarding Melanie Maguire’s conviction. How could a petite woman like her have cut up her 200lb husband without help and stuffed it into suitcases? An accomplice is referred to but never identified by authorities and this seems incredible after a three year investigation. What about the suitcases? Who purchased them and did anyone check where they had been bought? And finally where was her husband actually murdered? No evidence was ever found of a murder site which leads me to believe he had to have been taken to an unknown location brutally murdered and dismembered. Could she possibly have done that alone? I’m not convinced her conviction was beyond a reasonable doubt.

Wonderful whodunit

I ended up thinking 'no way could this woman do this'. Just because she had affairs when she was married, how does this make her a killer? & why wasn't the gambling & money loan been looked into, this surely is more believable. Bill obviously owed money because of his gambling & loan sharks are more likely to to take this approach.
I lloved listening to the narrator his voice was so soothing

Melanie Mcguire innocent or guilty

I've listened to a podcast about this case and really enjoyed the audible book. A great listen, going to download some more by the same author.

Excellent

I love this narrator. He’s very famous for his delivery whick takes a while to get used to but is exceptionally good. I think she killed him. Not sure how she managed the aftermath though.

Excellent

A riveting and excellent listen. Very well presented and researched. The narrator was also excellent. I find it very difficult to believe that this woman could have done what she is accused of without an accomplice. It's a harrowing story. The desecration of a human body is particularly abhorrent. No human being deserves this. Will we ever know the real truth behind this henious act.
RIP Bill Maguire.

A clearly told true crime story

I enjoyed listening to this book. I have listened to numerous crime stories in the past that were jumbled and confusing, but this was very easy to follow as the events were told chronologically, except for the two parts that gave the background of the lives of the husband and wife. The intonation of the narrator took a little bit of getting used to, though.

Narrator ruined it.

The cadence of the narrator was appalling. it was hard to finish this or even follow the story as his voice was so dull and repetetive. He had no expression and followed the same cadence all the way through sounding completely bored himself.

Waffle

Padded out with piles of irrelevant information. Far too much back story detail. We don’t need to know the weight of the vessel that the victim served on during his time in the navy/marines etc...
