Brilliant as ever

Dorothy Dunnett never fails to impress, intrigue and compel with the complexity of plot and characterisation. Her research is immaculate and the world she creates fascinating.

Enthralling

You have to work hard to keep up with Dorothy Dunnett’s marvellously complex and rich characters and plots. But it’s worth it. Particular acknowledgement due to John Banks: superb reading with dozens of different voices. French could be improved but that’s a tiny quibble. This series must have been a marathon, but he is consistent throughout, and his voice is a pleasure to listen to.

Beautifully read / fabulous book

Having read all the Niccolo books (yes, and the Lymond ones too but I prefer the Niccolo ones), I have been listening to the audio books during lockdown.
The narrator is very talented and it must be a huge challenge to manage all the characters. His rendition of Nicholas' acceptance of his huge loss as he realises hardly anyone will be his friend or follower, especially not his wife is exquisite : "not you, not you, not you".
