don't bother with audio. read the book first
my biggest criticism is with the narration
I bought the Kindle book and audiobook. Sarah Borges is reading it. she irritated me so much I had to keep turning off and trying again. if you imagine, in a highly dramatic, atmospheric stage of any plot, the narrator steps up the breathy, dramatic delivery, you can ride with that and connect, following through to the point if relief. But this lady keeps that high pitched tension ALL the way through the book. from page one. it is exhausting. there are no shades in the delivery it's all on tiptoes. no contrast. no shock element.
The second criticism is of the writing. The author repeats herself far too much. "I threw my head back in a gasp" I looked down and felt my chin on my chest etc. all very good strategies in a thrilling story, but should not be repeated. ever!!
The story is good. the plot is good. what stands out in neon lights, is that the writer, though talented, is inexperienced and a bit self-indulgent. it does not deserve the praise it gets. with experience AND A GOOD EDITOR who knows what they are doing (I don't care who they are they, they did not edit this book as they should) she will be worthy.
Edit: I just tried again to listen to this book and I absolutely can't. The narrator is TERRIBLE. The rhythm is chaotic. She speeds up and slows down within a sentence, which would add to the drama, if used appropriately, but she does it in every sentence, on every line, in every paragraph.
I won't buy any book that she narrates.

Loved it
If you enjoy a true mystery then this is brilliant. Is our heroine mad or is she being manipulated? Who the hell knows until the end. I honestly thought I knew but it corkscrews around so many corners that I became as confused as she was. You will need to concentrate but that isn't a bad thing. Now I am off to try Spare Room for more confusion!

Very unbelievable plot!
Having read and enjoyed Spare Room, I was looking forward to seeing what Dreda Say Mitchell could come up with next. The answer is another creepy psychological thriller. Well, it started well and I was completely hooked. Rachel, in debt, finds a dream job with a great salary working for Michael. Then he asks her to work in the 'server room' which is in the basement and can only be accessed via a trap door. The book is definitely creepy, with a proper sense of dread, but then things fell apart a bit. The plot was so far fetched. I know that this is fiction, but there are limits! However, overall I did enjoy listening.
Sarah Borges did a good job with the narration.

Intriguing story
A very enjoyable listen. Quite an unusual story where tension is palpable. Kept me guessing until the end. Excellent narration.
