Summary

“Perfect for fans of Lucy Foley.” —Jane Casey

“A spine-chillingly dark novel that will keep you guessing to the final page.” —The Sun

“A wickedly gripping thriller with some devilish twists.” —John Marrs

Everyone here has killed someone.

There is no way off this island.

You will all either kill or be killed here.

One of these statements is a lie. But which one?

Amira’s less than thrilled to be spending the weekend with her husband’s university friends. Two of them are hosting a joint fortieth on a private Scottish island, with vintage champagne, expensive gifts, and soaks in the wood-fired hot tub. Despite the luxury, Amira knows she’s going to feel left out, not to mention freezing cold and cut off.

When they decide to play ‘two truths and a lie’, anonymously posting three statements about themselves into a box, years of resentment start bubbling to the surface. And then an extra slip of paper emerges, scrawled with three chilling threats. Who wrote it? And are two of the statements really true—have they all been responsible for someone’s death?

With no phone reception and no way off the island, the group are trapped here until the end of the weekend. And as tension rises and secrets are spilled, they can’t shake the feeling that they’re not the only ones here. Is someone watching them? Someone who wants them dead? Or is it one of them who has murder in mind?

Great locked room thriller

I really enjoyed Claire McGowan's locked room mystery where a group of 8 adults and 4 children gather on an isolated Scottish island to celebrate a birthday. What could possible go wrong??

I did find it a bit confusing at first trying to work out in my head who was who and what was their relationship to the rest of the group. But once I got my head round that I flew through this book. I'd describe it as a mash up of And Then There Were None and I Know What You Did Last Summer. There are lots of twists along the way and I'm afraid I didn't guess whodunnit. Despite the large cast of characters I can't say I actually liked any of them, though I did have some sympathy for Amira.

The book is excellently read by Clare Corbett, who is brilliant at capturing children's voices. She is definitely one of my favourite narrators!

Tight new take on Christies masterpiece.

You could (if you were spiteful) simply dismiss this book as an update of And Then There Were None. Not that thats so bad as it is (and i will fight anyone over this) the greatest whodunnit ever written. But in fact this book stands up on its own right enough. I stayed up til 3am to finish it and maybe it was like having that buzz of reading ATTWN for the first time but only because it is a good well written thriller well worth the trouble.

Really….

So you can’t swim, you find the hidden radio which you could use to get help but you choose to set off on a paddle board….

Sort of ruined the (otherwise good) story for me.

Truth truth lie

Full of obnoxious people getting sort of just desserts. Stretches credulity of course. Amused by Amira’s lack of ability to swim and fear of water suddenly being able to paddle board in dangerous waters after one supposed past experience, but hey, it fits the plot. If you like a story of a group of people with pasts, being stuck and unable to escape then this is ok.

Really intense with twists and turns and an outcome I never expected. I was invested from the 1st chapter until the last

Not that original but still fun

Murder mystery thriller on an isolated Scottish island - it's been done before but sometimes familiar is ok. Entertainingly written with some good gory moments, and characters you'll love to hate.

Good narrator

Loved Clare Corbett’s narration. Always keeps me listening.
Not a bad book for free. A bit long winded and not a good ending. Not one of her best.

Hard to put down..

The characters were well drawn, and the story moved fast, changing viewpoints as it progressed. The book was hard to put down because you really want to hear all the secrets of past lives and find out what has happened to all the characters.
However, there were quite a few instances when you have to suspend disbelief and plough on. Lots of twists!
