A lot happened but not a lot happened

First off, the narration isn’t as bad as people are making it out to be. Listen to it at 1.3 speed and it’s better than a lot of narrators.

The main issue with this book is the awful writing. This story spans across 9 years and yet i felt like nothing truly happened. No depth to the story, no opportunity to enjoy characters and see them develop, it all felt rushed.

Just didn’t click for me

This tale of a young man finding friends and meaning as a soldier was perfectly fine but just didn’t do for me. None of the characters really grabbed me and the narration felt quite one-note. There were also too many wrongly pronounced words to ignore.

really interesting

something completely different and I really enjoyed it. Great story and an insight into tutor life and war. accents a bit suspect at times, Sharp and Rene come to mind, but it didn't spoil it.

Terrible narration

A good story spoiled by a narrator that sounded like someone reading a statement in court half the time I persevered hoping it would improve but if anything got worse definitely won’t be listening to the next book in the series which is a shame. I wish authors bothered to select decent narrators this isn’t the first time I’ve experienced this on audible but does anyone really care!! Apparently can’t give no stars for performance 😡

Calming to listen to but enthralling when you pay attention.

So I decided to give the a go as my pre sleep listen as it was free and I am a bit of a Tudor nerd. The reader strikes a lovely balance of keen delivery while relaxing the listener. Tie that in with a historically accurate story and likeable characters, it’s a winner for me!

Metronome in the form of a book.

A consistent words per minute with intonation slightly off throughout. I feel for the narrator, his strength lies more where characters and personalities are not a thing. That said, the existence of characters wity personality are significantly lacking in this flat book, so maybe it matched his CV.

The narration aside, it was a relaxing beat to drift off to sleep to, but gripping the story is not. It seems to cross time and space I exected to meet Major Major Major. The concept is good, but at times it felt like the author had sparks of energy, throwing in a few words too many in the style expected of sentence structure of the time - then I guess the coffee shop door closed and we go back to normal narrative. it certainly wasn't a jazz cafe.

Could have been good, but I'll stick to Cornwell

Nothing really, it's okay.

This is quite a 'nothing' novel', in the sense that there is no genuine depth to any character. It just, sort of, rambles on yet it is listenable to in a non-challenging manner.

Unfortunately, I won’t be listening to any more books in this series. The narration was terrible.
