Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Captain David Marquet was used to giving orders. In the high-stress environment of the USS Santa Fe, a nuclear-powered submarine, it was crucial his men did their job well. But the ship was dogged by poor morale, poor performance and the worst retention in the fleet.

One day, Marquet unknowingly gave an impossible order and his crew tried to follow it anyway. He realised he was leading in a culture of followers and they were all in danger unless they fundamentally changed the way they did things.

Marquet took matters into his own hands and pushed for leadership at every level. Before long, his crew became fully engaged and the Santa Fe skyrocketed from worst to first in the fleet.

No matter your business or position, you can apply Marquet's approach to create a workplace where everyone takes responsibility for their actions, people are healthier and happier - and everyone is a leader.

Simply Excellent

The book was easy to follow and provided lots of excellent leadership tools, delivered in Nice bite sized chunks. I will definitely be taking the three word rule into my workplace!

great content, boring delivery

I like the content of the book and what it teaches, it's great, but I struggled to pay attention. partially cause army stories bore me to tears and partially cause its not a very engaging narrative. worth reading, especially if you can find a digested version

Content fine, narration is a difficult listen.

How long could you listen to Jo Biden for ? Book was recommended. Narration is hard work.

Rich insights into a modern leadership philosophy

After having gone through Gene Fluckey's Thunder Below i came up next with this great material. As i am inside an IT department with hundreds of crucial systems being run i've discovered the similarity to the complex system a nuclear submarine stands for. I am keen to implement the principles of leader-leader into my organization.

Clear, simple and inspiring

Having listened to David Marquet at a leadership seminar, and having researched some of the ideas of Leader-Leader, I chose to listen to the book. I’m very happy I did. Very clear, easy to understand and full of ideas to really help empower and then enfranchise a team. Highly recommended.

Captivating

How a leader changed the entire fleet from order followers into leading leaders. Backed by examples from life.
