Summary
Horace was 10, Ethel seven, when Jim Cooper, home from the trenches, minus an arm and just about managing on his own, found them huddled in a doorway on a wet night in Walworth. Slightly against his better judgement he took them in, fed them cocoa and put them to sleep in his bed. A few days later he found that - somehow - he had become the unofficial guardian of Horace and Ethel. It was him, the orphanage, or separation for the gutsy little pair who would have to be farmed out to anyone who would take them, and Jim felt a sudden affinity for the two cheeky cockney kids. The first thing he had to do was find fresh lodgings for them all.
Miss Rebecca Pilgrim was a woman of strict Victorian principles, eminently respectable, and determined to keep her privacy intact. She had reckoned without her new lodgers - Horace, Ethel and, above all, the irrepressible Jim Cooper. And thus began the humanising of Miss Pilgrim, who turned out to be younger, prettier and far gentler than any of them had suspected.

wholly enjoyable!
I really enjoyed listening and much preferred this narrator to the subsequent one in the Adams family series.

Feel Good Story
I enjoyed this story but felt it was built on a false premise that 2 orphans could disappear into the family of a single man with no one demonstrating particular concern for their welfare

a lovely story
M.J.Staples is one talented author. I'm nearly halfway through the Adams family sagas which I'm hooked on. Having spotted these stand alone titles I was eager to give them a try and this was no disappointment at all. A lovely story with such likeable characters, it's just sad when they come to an end. There's only one title of the stand alone titles I couldn't get into up until now but having enjoyed this so much I shall probably give that other title a go once again. If you like the Adams family series you'll love this and be happy to part with a credit for it.

Beautiful
This story had me entranced from the first chapter. Beautifully written and narrated, I really didn't want it to end. I also loved that you tied it in with the Adams family saga. I think this book could have a sequel, I would love to hear a story of their adult lives.
