Summary

Magic weapons. Deadly monsters. Epic quests. All just another day in the life of a Vigil.

Boyd Knight found his calling when he joined the Marines and qualified for the elite Force Recon. He’d found a tribe and a family, so when a hand grenade landed near his team, he jumped on it without thought or regret.

But instead of winding up dead, he wakes up butt naked in a cave full of monsters with a knife in one hand and a pistol in the other. He’s been chosen by Raguel, Five-Faced God of Justice, and entrusted with the power of the Vigil Bound. Every kill makes him stronger, and thanks to the Ascendant System, Boyd can level up, unlock increasingly powerful spells, and even harness the abilities of the monsters he’s been dispatched to hunt.

If he can survive the deadly shapeshifter stalking him from the shadows, Boyd’s second life promises to be even more ass-kickingly epic than his first.

From the bestselling author of Rogue DungeonBibliomancer, Shadowcroft Acadmey for Dungeons and Viridian Gate Online comes a shoot-'em-up LitRPG fantasy series brimming with spells, upgrades, guns, and monsters!

annoyingly good

Loved the book. Luke Daniels is still my favorite!
But some voices just ruin it for me. I often skipped ahead to avoid those voices entirely. Other than that I loved it and will keep listening.

Good but overly wordy

There’s times when a simple sentence would suffice but the author seems to use multiple paragraphs and at points I was thinking “we get it, move on please” but overall it’s a good story

The hypocrisy was just too much

I really tried to continue to listen but the hypocrisy of the main character just got to me in the end with 1 hour left. The MC keeps talking about the line to not cross regarding women and children but he is a veteran of the Iraq invasion to steal their resources where countless women and children (their fathers and husbands) died defending their land... It's just too much.

Also, the 'bad guys' are doing what they have to do to avoid being used as pawns in wars of kings and queens which would see their order having to fight humans instead of monsters. The story tried to paint them as the bad guys due to them kidnapping the illegitimate son of the prince and using him as a political prisoner in order to keep the prince in line... which at the same time will save them from civil war and in the case they lost also saving them to be used to attack the foreign queen...

I also tried to wait to see if the MC was finally going to get the resurrection skill for 27 ward points but I guess that would just be too smart of the MC to do,
