Summary

Marvellously atmospheric tale of strangers summoned to a grand but neglected villa on the Italian coast. Each of them has been named in a will, but nobody knows their benefactress....

Four very different people are named in a will. Delia, an opera singer robbed of her voice by illness; George, an idealistic scientist who cannot face what his skills have created; Marjorie, desperately poor and unable to dislodge her writer’s block; and Lucius, ostensibly in control but whose personal life is in chaos. All are summoned to the Villa Dante, home of the late Beatrice Malaspina. But who was she?

While they wait to find out, the villa begins to work its seductive magic. With its faded frescoes, overgrown garden, and magnificent mediaeval tower, it is unlike anywhere they have been before.

Slowly four characters who have gone to great lengths to hide their troubles find that change - and even hope - is possible after all. But the mysterious Beatrice has a devastating secret to reveal that will affect them all....

A beautiful evocation of Italy in the aftermath of World War Two and the personal consequences of living through such a time and a celebration of humankind’s ability to heal and learn to love again, this most absorbing novel will win Elizabeth Edmondson a host of new fans.

Long and drawn out

I did enjoy the book although the narrators voice sounded too old for its 26 yr old character. In general it didn't hold my attention and I found my mind wandering.

Old time drama

Nice story. Old fashioned drama of families and war. The "treasure hunt" adds to the atmosphere. Very enjoyable.

Lovely story

My first of this author and so glad I have enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next.
I enjoyed the twists and turns and some were not a surprise but pleasing I was right, others a total "Oh Of course" moment. Lovely. Shame it had to end. I also enjoyed the narration, voices were good, which always helps with the story. Thank you.

A book of many facets.

I found the Villa in Italy quite confusing and i was still trying to sort out the characters more than half way through. The narrator had a flat voice which I didn't particularly enjoy, even with all the different people she played. I managed to finish the book but can't say it was enjoyable. Much work and thought has gone into it, and basically quite clever, but not for me. Sorry.

Villa in Italy

At the heart of this story lies a mystery which I found intriguing. What linked these disparate people to each other and to the deceased owner of the Villa? The reader sounded a bit flat at times but differentiated the voices of the characters from each other convincingly.
Not my usual choice of book but I would recommend it.

A lovely gentle listen

A lovely story. Though the narrator sounds much older than the characters. Keep remembering that and sit back into a gentle, heartwarming story

Brilliant story

I really enjoyed this story and have listened twice. The first time I was intrigued by the mystery of the story, but then went back and listened again to pick up clues I might have missed while listening. it is a very well crafted story, in my view, spanning several generations, providing lots of twists and turns and surprises. I became quite engrossed in it and will probably listen to it again. The narrator has a clear, precise voice with plenty of modulation and voices different characters distinctively. I would thoroughly recommend this book.
