About this listen

The rounds were single shot from the same two enemy positions, trying to pick me off. They were kicking up the dirt around me. Then all hell broke loose as the gunship's Gatling vomited ammo right over my head. The sound was deafening. It was now or never. I got up and ran.

A captain in 29 Commando, Johnny Mercer served in the army for 12 years. On his third tour of Afghanistan, he was a joint fires controller, with the pressurized job of bringing down artillery and air strikes in close proximity to his own troops. Based in an area of Northern Helmand that was riddled with Taliban leaders, he walked into danger with every patrol, determined to protect them. Then, one morning, in brutal close-quarter combat, everything changed....

In We Were Warriors, Johnny takes us from his commando training to the heat, blood and chaos of battle. With brutal honesty he describes what it is like to risk your life every day, pushing through the fear that follows watching your friends die. He took the fight back to the enemy with a relentless efficiency that came at a high personal cost. Back in the UK, seeing the inadequate care available for veterans and their families, he was inspired to run for Parliament in the hope he could improve their plight. Unflinching, action-packed and laced with wry humour, We Were Warriors is a compelling listen.

Critic reviews

"An adrenalin-fuelled, gritty story of heroism on the frontline in Afghanistan." (Andy McNab)
"This is not the stereotypical account of war, it's without doubt the best first hand account in a war zone I've ever read. Brutally honest, humble and written with a pace that could induce a heart attack." (Tom Marcus, ex MI5 surveillance officer, author of Soldier, Spy)

Not what I was expecting

I will admit to buying this purely out of curiosity because he is an MP, but what I got was far more interesting. It was a very "real" account of modern warfare. It's quite easy to find books like this that describe WWII but books about modern wars can often dramatize it. This pulled no punches and was harrowing in parts. The only thing I didn't like was the political campaign section at the end, but it is part of his life and therefore his story so I don't blame him for including it.

Overall a very good book.

A rare account of war in our time

The immediacy and clarity of the writing brings to life the particular horror of the recent Afghan debacle where those who fought for freedom were betrayed by weak governments in the West.

An heroic story

I found this story interesting and exciting. An honest description of his life as a boy in a very strictly religious home and the evolution to a brave soldier and leader of men. It was an addictive read impossible to put down except for more important issues.
Thank you Johnny Mercer for an excellent story and what I hope is a very happy ending.

Inspirational story

Great to listen to, factual account of the highs and lows of going to war in far off lands and the struggles that our men face when they come back. Highly recommended
