The son of a Hungarian immigrant, Namath left the steel country of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, for the Deep South, where he played quarterback for Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama. Almost four years later, he signed a $427,000 contract with the New York Jets that changed football forever, transforming a crude, violent game into show business.

In Golden Days, acclaimed sports journalist Jack McCallum uses these two teams - the Jerry West/Wilt Chamberlain/Elgin Baylor Lakers and the Stephen Curry/Kevin Durant/Draymond Green Warriors - to trace the dynamic history of the National Basketball Association, which for much of the last half century has marched memorably through the state of California. Tying together the two strands of McCallum's story is Hall of Famer West, the ferociously competitive Laker guard who later became one of the key architects of the Warriors.

Beautiful
- By Jamal on 21-10-20
Summary
He is one of basketball's towering figures: "Mr. Clutch," who mesmerized his opponents and fans. The coach who began the Lakers' resurgence in the 1970s. The general manager who helped bring "Showtime" to Los Angeles, creating a championship-winning force that continues to this day.
Now, for the first time, the legendary Jerry West tells his story-from his tough childhood in West Virginia, to his unbelievable college success at West Virginia University, his 40-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, and his relationships with NBA legends like Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kobe Bryant. Unsparing in its self-assessment and honesty, West by West is far more than a sports memoir: it is a profound confession and a magnificent inspiration.

Jerry is really disturbed and needs help
What disappointed you about West by West?
About as poorly written book as one could write. This book is disturbing for one who loved basketball in the 60's. Jerry, get help before you take your own life. It didn't help that his son Ryan was the narrator. His performance was as bad as the writing of the book.
I finished listening to this recording only because of the characters that surrounded Jerry during his career. Russell, Baylor, Cousy, Robertson, Barry etc...
Painful...
Has West by West turned you off from other books in this genre?
Absolutely not
How could the performance have been better?
The performance was dismal. The context of the book didn't help.
What character would you cut from West by West?
N/A

So terrible!
Would you ever listen to anything by Jerry West and Jonathan Coleman again?
No!!
Would you be willing to try another one of Ryan West’s performances?
No way! He's terrible. Monotone.
Any additional comments?
This may have been a gripping book, but I couldn't get past the monotone performance. Depressing!

a little bit disturbing, and not that well done.
I don't listen to many autobiographies, but I didn't get a sence that Jerry West understood himself that well, he listed the oddities, quirks and superstitions but glossed over his mistakes and the people he wronged, West needed get an actual writer to help him tell his story, not his pal, and worse his son reads the book, and after listening to him read, you really appreciate a good reader, seven words take a breath, seven more, all the way through, stay away.
