Summary

Lannick deVeers used to be somebody. A hero, even. Then, he ran afoul of the kingdom's most powerful general and the cost he paid was nearly too much to bear. In the years that followed, his grief turned him into a shadow of his former self, and he spent his days drowning his regrets in tankards of ale. But now an unexpected encounter casts Lannick upon an unlikely path to revenge. If he can just find the strength to overcome the many mistakes of his past, he can seize the chance to become a hero once more. And with an ancient enemy lurking at the kingdom's doorstep, he'd better....

Wow. Stop reading and get listening!!

Where does What Remains of Heroes rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I was blown away by this book. Really, really, good!! A mature and very enjoyable epic of a fantasy book that I could not stop listening too!

What was one of the most memorable moments of What Remains of Heroes?

What really gripped me was the way that the writer has effortlessly woven the stories of some great characters into a brilliant story. We have a dark world with real characters. It's not a good guy vs bad guy formula. The characters change and develop and you will like them and then wonder why you did and then like them all over again. Very good writing!

Which character – as performed by Andrew Tell – was your favourite?

I liked the character of Lannick, although as I've said the character development in this book is outstanding. I found myself wanting to give him a kick so that he could reach the potential that I could see in him. Very good narration to avert, very good book. Overall excellent!!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I read a lot of fantasy, crime, thrillers etc. This one caught me by surprise and I couldn't stop listening. It's a brilliant book that's just simply well written from start to finish.

Brutal, gritty and powerful fantasy.

I really enjoyed the story and flew through it. I struggled ever so slightly with the narration, although that could be the accent - since I'm a Brit. I just struggled to ease into it, although the voices became familiar quickly. despite this, the narration was clear and concise.
The characters wonderfully sit in the grey areas of grimdark and the good and the bad are not clear, which I liked. Happy that there were characters who weren't warriors, but heroes in themselves. All in all it's proved an intriguing beginning to an epic saga.
