About this listen

Murder, blackmail and drug dealing on the Tiber combine in one of Ngaio Marsh’s liveliest and most evocative novels.

When their guide disappears mysteriously in the depths of a Roman basilica, the members of Mr. Sebastian Mailer’s tour group seem strangely unperturbed. But when a body is discovered in an Etruscan sarcophagus, Superintendent Alleyn, in Rome incognito on the trail of an international drug racket, is very much concerned....

Really accomplished narrator and great story

My first Marsh but not my last. I’d never heard of this author and she’s great fun. This book benefited enormously from the narration. A superb performance.

Confused

I usually love Ngaio Marsh’ books. Her stories are so clever with some fascinating characters too. However I was confused through out most of this book. Not sure if it was the delivery of the narrative or how the story was written. Some books are not necessarily good read aloud. I think if I had the book in front of me , I would have followed it better. Not my favorite.

Classic Marsh.

Gorgeous authorship displaying again one of the great fictional detectives of the Golden Era of the whodunit genre. A wonderful cast of characters are incisively drawn by the magnificent James Saxon who infuses every voice with individuality and personality. Marsh is up there with Christie and Allingham.

Molto Bene!

Thoroughly enjoyable! This was an expected delight from start to finish. I’m usually weary of “fish out of water” outings for well loved characters. In so many cases they’re diminished by the absence of familiar supporting figures, and seem odd in different surroundings. This should be a case study in how to achieve it. Great characters, great pace & a nice action scene (sniffing out rats, or a least, one large malodorous one) and an excellent narrator. I was sorry to come to the end of this!

Dreadful narration.

I couldn't make it past chapter one and despite Audibles promises, I can't return it.

The narration was dreadful, total ham. I really wish people would stop with the comedy accents, it distracts from the story.
