About this listen

Some moments burn in the mind for ever. The landing is dark. Light comes from a window at the far end, enough to run by. Breath comes hard. From the stairs sound heavy footfalls in pursuit. The landing ends in a last doorway. There is no more running, only the need to hide....

Imagine not knowing the father of your child. Not knowing his name. What he looks like. Or what sort of person he is. Although she is desperate for a baby, that is something that Kate Powell cannot accept. Single, independent, she likes to be in control of her own life - even if it has, somehow, become strangely shallow and meaningless.

Then Kate meets a man who seems to be the answer to all her problems. But we all know appearances can be dangerously deceptive. And Kate should, too. Soon her life is out her hands. And out of control....

Better to read the book

I think this is a book best read on paper. There is so much narrative that you would flick over and it is much more difficult in an audio book. Story ok, just overly descriptive.

Smoke was very dense!!

This book is not a patch on Simon's regular novels.
i was bored with its slowness and poor story line. i nearly gave up many times it did not motivate me to listen at every opportunity like a good book should.
I will be returning it forthwith.

Don't bother

I know this is a fiction book but it's so far fetched, it's ridiculous!
What really annoyed me was the interactions of the so called friends, I'd not be calling one friend if they talked to me in that way..

Such a shame

I’ve read or listened to every Simon Beckett book unfortunately I agree with the last review it was very slow I persevered through it hoping it would improve but didn’t. It’s such a shame because his other books particularly the Dr David Hunter are excellent.

zzzzzzz boring, Dire

I agree with the previous reviews. I have really enjoyed the David Hunter books and Johnathan Keeble reads them magnificently. On the strength of the previous books being well written by Simon Beckett even though it wasn't being read by Mr Keeble, I thought it was bound to be good......
Wrong wrong wrong
I couldn't believe what a dreary lack lustre narrator Julia Barrie was. I hadn't heard her narrate anything before and to begin with I thought the character was drug induced...
NOOO!
She continued.in the same dreary manner,
zzzz snore, bored scream.. zzzz
I hoped this character was going to get murdered and Johnathan would take over, aka David Hunter...
I just couldn't stand it past chapter 3...... and I deserve a medal for lasting that long. I don't know or care whether she went for IVF or not, quitre frankly I didn't care, but it is not going to happen any other way, she would bore any suitor to death unless she rohypnolled them, with industrial amounts
If I could have given a lower score I would have but minus scores aren't allowed sadly.
. RETURNED forthwith..
