Story
You always remember your first love. Don't you? It began with four words. "I love your laugh." But that was 12 years ago. It really began the day Georgina was fired from The Worst Restaurant in Sheffield (TripAdvisor) and found The Worst Boyfriend in the World (Georgina's best friends) in bed with someone else. So when her new boss, Lucas McCarthy, turns out to be the boy who wrote those words to her all that time ago, it feels like the start of something. The only problem? He doesn't seem to remember Georgina at all.

You never forget the one that got away, do you? Nell Mason is extremely happy with her life–or at least that’s what she tells herself. She’s lucky to have a high-powered job as a lawyer, even if it does come with an eccentric set of billionaire divorce clients. And she’s absolutely fine living with her sweet, if slightly dull, boyfriend Gus in their London flat, where they have very sensible sex once (okay, sometimes twice) a week. Summary
An achingly funny story from the author of the best-selling You Had Me at Hello.
When Edie is caught in a compromising position at her colleagues' wedding, all the blame falls on her - turns out that personal popularity in the office is not that different from your school days. Shamed online and ostracised by everyone she knows, Edie's forced to take an extended sabbatical - ghostwriting an autobiography for hot new acting talent, Elliot Owen. Easy, right?
Wrong. Banished back to her hometown of Nottingham, Edie is not only dealing with a man who probably hasn't heard the word no in a decade but also suffering an excruciating regression to her teenage years as she moves back in with her widowed father and judgy, layabout sister.
When the world is asking who you are, it's hard not to question yourself. Who's that girl? Edie is ready to find out.
Critic reviews

"McFarlane's writing will make you laugh out loud 5*." ( Sunday Express)

"A delicious feast of comic romance.... Smart and funny." ( Sunday Mirror)
"[McFarlane] has pulled it out of the bag again, crafting an impassioned novel of female self-discovery.... Jam-packed with quirky social satire that delights and entertains." ( OK)

Dragged and rubbish ending
This had loads of potential but her previous relationship drama and choices were grating, and the ending was rubbish. It was a bit stretched out and dragged too. Shame because there’s a lot that could have been done with this story. The narrator has been great with other books, and although she was mostly good, it was really stilted and unnatural for a lot of the dialogue.

Confusing dialogue for audio book
Because a listener has difficulty distinguishing “thought dialogue “ from real dialogue, it was often too hard to follow along with the story line. I’ve listened to literally hundreds of books and this book confused me often. Perhaps when I re-listen again in a couple of months, it will be easier to follow. I was not totally pleased with the end even if real life throws these types of curves. McFarlane remains one of my favorite authors.

Completely disappointing
Let me say up front that if bullying is a trigger for you, avoid this story and many of this authors other books.
The narrator did a fair job. I can say that. Sometimes her pronunciations were odd, but over all decent.
But the positives end there. The entire story is a slow-motion crashing of people never saying what they mean to say. The rare moments of honesty are lost among angst and supposition, hurt and anger. I found myself skipping ahead near the end, because the emotional scene that was meant to be climactic became so drawn out and wrung out and needlessly angsty that going through every word was too hard to stomach.
I won’t spoil the end but if you’re looking for something that seems well thought-out and satisfying, don’t even start this book.

Rich and deep characters, solid plot
Enjoy a wonderful romance for intelligent readers. Mhairi McFarland is a writer who stands apart from the majority of romance authors because her books are both plot and character driven. Her writing is solidly. This is not a skeletal plot structure hung with intermittent sex scenes. In fact, in the same vein as Georgette Heyer it’s the development of the emotional affair that is the framework of the novel. (No one is on par with Georgette Heyer but you know what I mean—- she didn’t write bodice rippers and neither does this author.) Instead a world is built and the characters behave like evolved humans do within well constructed worlds. England in contemporary times with contemporary issues. I have listened to this book five or more times as I have done with all the authors books. I expect that will continue. Also the reader’s British accent is well appreciated.

I Couldn’t WAIT to Write This Review!!!
I absolutely LOVED this book. The main character was so lovable, in all her flaws. The supporting character were very well thought out, I believe. There were moments that had me just sitting in rapt attention hanging on the readers each word. At one point I even shed a tear!!! I’ve never cried listening to an audio book!!!
I just loved this book and felt this weird almost…grief when it was over. I miss Edie. What a fantastic listen. It’s long, and that may put some off, but I loved it. The writer didn’t leave anything dangling or rush any endings. Freaking. Fantastic. Going to try and find more from this without immediately.
