Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Second to none in her ability to make detective stories, Georgette Heyer is queen of the genre.

It is a complete mystery why anyone would choose to murder the trusted old butler of Norton Manor. Barrister-turned-amateur-detective Frank Amberley has reason to suspect that the shooting involves the nervy young lady discovered at the scene of the crime, a snooping gentleman in the halls of Greythorne and then a second dead body. A dramatic tale of upstairs, downstairs and family secrets.

Excellent In all respects

An old favourite beautifully narrated. Georgette Heyer’s detective novels are a real joy and Matt Addis is an excellent narrator.

Wonderful performance of an old favourite.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Matt Addis' narration of a Sophia Holloway novel, I searched for other titles read by him and found this series of Georgette Hayer detective novels. I have read all of Hayer's novels in the past & her books are firm favourites. However, for me, this makes performance by the narrator of a book crucial. Listening to a familiar friend being badly performed is torture . I purchased the first in the series hoping it would live up to expectations. And it did. I have now listened to the whole series & Matt Addis did a wonderful job, even for the female voices. He really captures the essence of the characters. I hope he reads the rest of Hayer's book as I have avoided most of them previously due to dislike of the narrator of the only one I had tried before this series.

Excellent

Georgette Heyer’s detective stories are less well known than her regency romances and this is a real shame. This is an excellent story and the narrator does an excellent job. Highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed this performance

Very entertaining and typical of its era. Wonderfully performed by Matt Addis, an absolute joy to listen to. Better than usual cosy murder mystery, but that's not really why you listen to it! It's the dialog and the times that are so beautifully recreated. Easy listening at its best.

Entertaining light murder mystery

I enjoyed this. Light weight, but easy to listen to classic murder mystery. Well narrated.

Heyer’s characters and dialogue

. She is masterful at populating her books with wonderful people. She is warm and funny in the midst of horror and crime. The development of the plot is excellent. I loved this story.
The reading, however, nearly spoilt the book for me. The reader has a very unfortunate habit of raising the pitch of the penultimate syllable in almost every sentence. At the very least, this was annoying, but on occasion it wrecked the atmosphere. He can do dialogue very well , and created some good voices, particularly the women’s voices, but the narration in between was constantly marred by this habit. He also appeared embarrassed when he read the love scene, which consequently was emotionless and unconvincing. I didn’t feel that he understood the book.

Good story, great narration

Georgette Heyer’s usual excellent characterisation but not her best story and neither the hero nor the heroine really likeable. Matt Addis is a brilliant narrator though and perfectly brings the characters to life making this a very enjoyable listen.
