Summary

They burned me and mine. I'm not done until I burn them and theirs in return.

Witch hunts have plagued the kingdom of Olyanath for decades. Thousands were slain due to the king’s paranoia of women who practice Senspiritic magic. No more.

Nye and his companions have seen enough of murder and misogyny. Fifteen years have passed since he joined the witch hunters, and now, at long last, an opportunity to destroy them from the inside reveals itself. An opportunity to overthrow the king and end his reign of cruelty. But 15 years of pretense have taken a toll. The strive for vengeance has steered Nye toward a path of violence and villainy. His hands are stained by the blood of countless innocents, his heart is scorched by grief, and his sanity hangs by a thread.

Even if he can kill the king and see this revolution through, it may not suffice to purge the voices from his head.

Witches are haunted in Olyanath, for a reason.

Winds of strife has a great storytelling, filled with minor memes, Easter eggs, great characters, a story filled with sadness and hope. A journey in a universe that couldn't be farther than our own yet felt so familiar.
A great look over the ideals in a blind hatered and fear conquered by valor and cunningness, I loved it very much!
Lovers of V for vendetta, Attack on Titan, magic, fantasy and great fights will enjoy this book immensely.

A great new voice in dark fantasy!

Actual rating; 4.5
TWs: mental disorders, gaslighting, death and dark topics in general.

So... what a debut we have here. And what a great way for you to get into dark fantasy.

We are going to be following Nye, infiltrated in a group called the Sun Harbingers, and you now what? They hunt women who practice sensepirity (the magic of this world) and he is going to take them down from the inside.

Winds of Strife has one of the best opening prologues that I've seen in a long time. It'll suck in completely from page one (special mention to the epilogue too because now I need book 2). And from there you will follow Nye and a bunch of other POVs as they try to either kill witches or prevent the hunting.

As I just said we follow a good chunk of characters, but I will have to point that Nye is a hell of a grey character. He is abusive, manipulative and ruthless. He will do anything to get his revenge and destroy the Sun Harbingers, basically the only important thing to him is the end, not the means. And yet I still liked following him because deep down you know he is right (yes it is complicated). Special mentions to Ivy and Diane who were also fantastic characters.
Basically, if you like morally grey characters you will love this.

Now for sensespirity... I LOVED THE MAGIC SYSTEM. It is complex and complicated and fascinating to learn more about. It is based on the use of emotions and how to harvest them. Each of them comes with a gain but also a cost. For example harvesting Calm will give you a shield but it will also make you less empathetic. (also if you harvest hatred it might kill you). It is worth reading the book just for the magic system alone.

The only two things I would nit pick is the love story, which I felt it was a bit rushed (though I can understand why it might feel like that). And the fact that I want more external world building, gimme more!

Overall I highly recommend this one for any fantasy reader, you are in for a treat!

Fantasy-horror with emotion driven magic system!

As a character driven reader, I say that this book is awesome! These characters are so morally grey and it makes them so interesting to follow. My feelings towards Nye are confused, but that's a good thing, I like following him but don't agree with what he does.
The magic system of this world is great to explore too. I like that there are consequences for the use of magic to the person using it. Really enjoyed this and woupd recommend if uou like fantasy mixed with horror (dark themed fantasy).
Triggers for: domestic abuse, sexual abuse is mentioned but not described and mental disorders.

Bloody good first book

This was a bloody excellent first book in a series. I need to think on my thoughts but I just wanna gush about it.
Firstly the characters were excellent, be it the complicated Nye, Ivy the princess who starts as a pawn in everyones game, Diane a witch with a dark history and relationship with Nye, and the wicked King Aliddar. Each character was interesting from their first meeting but getting to see them over the book was excellent, especially Nye, he was captivatingly dark.
The magic system was interesting and complex, and it was nice to have it slowly explained over the course of the book.
The plot was fast paced and kept me hooked, I couldn't put it down as each new chapter had me wanting to read the next.
I also liked how the plot dealt with abuse, and control, and the cyclical nature of it
Overall Im so happy I picked this up, it was an excellent dark fantasy romp, with compelling characters and a really cool magic system.
The narration was also excellent, and I look forward to listening to more by the narrator
