So glad to find this absolute gem!

A fantastic Victorian period piece crammed with fascinating details, acerbic descriptions, three dimensional characters (even the bit parts!) and a great central murder mystery. Like many of the Cribb and Thackeray stories, the setting is the most important thing, the detectives only turn up two thirds of the way through the story, but honestly that never bothered me- plus David Thorpe is a perfect match for the text, and brings the narrative and characters to life.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I haven’t enjoyed a fiction book so much for ages. It brought me to a world I knew nothing about and kept me entertained throughout. The dialogue was peppered with occasional modern phrases but the lack of wokeness was welcome and refreshing. If you want a straightforward detective story with no unnecessary political correctness thrown in , you’re on to a winner.

racist terminology totally unnecessary to plot or

This book has racist repeated terminology.I had to stop reading. The appalling stereotypes were not amusing.as there was littlte use of the language of the era it can only be that thecwriter himself thinks its acceptable.A s it is a modern hook it should not be published on Amazon without a label.
