About this listen

Once, he was known as the Cold Ax of the North. Heads piled at his feet, and he was feared by all on the battlefield. But his people lost the war....

Now, Rothan is a prisoner. He is forced to fight as a gladiator for the entertainment of his hated Imperial enemies. Five years of this humiliating captivity, and he has almost completed his sentence. Just three more days and he is free.

However, here in this wretched Imperial City, he has come to love one thing: the desertland concubine, Bellabel. He must find a way to win her freedom, to take her with him to the North. She must be his.

And so, he enters into a bargain with the Ringmaster of the City, a bargain for her freedom, a bargain which will catapult him into a far more twisted fate than he ever imagined.

Contains mature themes.

Decent low fantasy with all the tropes

Fairly good low fantasy in the vein of 80s pulp fantasy stories. Predictable but enjoyable romp in a world easily understood and where the characters fill typical roles. Narration is good, although the gravelly, American accent as a female in the graphic “adult” encounters takes some getting your head around. Listen if you like Conan, D&D, Black Library, etc.

It’s like there was a low budget on the imagination

I don’t write many reviews but this story was so formulaic and plodding, with fantasy politics and world lore show-horned in around terrible, overly archaic dialogue and sex scenes that featured in far too much details and far too frequently for this to be any more than smut material for middle-aged dorks that still live in their mum’s basements.
The narration lacked any rhythm and real emotion for the characters. Sometimes it felt like it was being read off an autocue with had been punctuated poorly. I can only liken it to when one hears AI narrating clips on media streaming sites. Terrible book and glad it was free with my subscription and I I hadn’t made the mistake of deliberately purchasing it.
